How you're assessed

The certificate is assessed by a portfolio of evidence. For each of the five units you complete written assignments and workbook questions online. There are no exams and no workplace observations.

01Study the unit

Work through the lessons, scenarios and knowledge checks online, with your named UK tutor and AI Study Support on hand.

02Write your answers

Complete the written assignment and workbook questions, giving examples and explanations. Where a unit asks you to recognise behaviour that challenges, you do this through examples in your written work.

03Get marked and feedback

Your tutor marks your work against every assessment criterion in 5 to 7 working days. If anything is not yet met, you get feedback and resubmit.

04Receive your certificate

Once all five units are passed, your work is quality assured and TQUK issues your certificate.

Your work is internally assessed by Lift College tutors and externally quality assured by TQUK. The result is pass or fail. This is a knowledge qualification: it does not train or assess you in physical intervention or restraint.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is the Level 2 Behaviour that Challenges certificate regulated?

Yes. The TQUK Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Behaviour that Challenges (RQF) is regulated by Ofqual and is on the Ofqual register at Level 2, qualification number 603/2944/0. It is 15 credits, 130 guided learning hours and 153 hours total qualification time. Training Qualifications UK issues the certificate, and Lift College is a TQUK recognised centre.

How long does it take?

Many people take 3 to 6 months, studying a few hours a week. The qualification is 130 guided learning hours and 153 hours total qualification time across five units. There is no timetable, so you move on as soon as each unit is marked.

How is it assessed?

By a portfolio of written assignments and workbook questions for each of the five units. Your named UK tutor marks your work, and TQUK externally quality assures it. The result is pass or fail.

Are there any exams?

No. There are no exams, no timed tests and no workplace observations. Everything is written work you complete online.

What are the entry requirements?

You need to be 16 or over, and you need to be able to read and write in English, because the course is taught and assessed in English. You do not need any previous qualification or experience to start.

What does it cost?

One price covers the whole course: your named UK tutor, marking, AI Study Support, your TQUK registration and your TQUK certificate. You can pay monthly or in full, and the prices are shown on this page. Every plan starts with a 7-day free trial and is covered by our 14-day money back guarantee. Paying today, it is £29.99 a month or £269.99 in full. After the 7-day free trial, it is £39.99 a month or £399.99 in full.

Can my employer pay?

Yes. Your employer can open an organisation account with Lift College, add you and any colleagues, and pay by card or by invoice with their own PO number. Organisation accounts get 10% off every qualification against the price one person pays, and managers can see each learner's progress. An organisation place is £359.99, 10% off the £399.99 price, paid by invoice.

What can I do after this qualification?

You could use the certificate to move into a support worker or care role, or go on to the TQUK Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care. Same-level options include certificates in understanding autism and in supporting individuals with learning disabilities. This is a knowledge qualification: it shows you understand behaviour that challenges, and it does not on its own qualify you for a particular post. Employers decide what each role needs.

What is behaviour that challenges?

It is behaviour that puts the person or the people around them at risk, or that stops the person taking part in everyday life. It can include aggression, self-injury, shouting or running away. It is often a way of communicating pain, fear, frustration or an unmet need, which is why the course starts with understanding the reasons behind it.

Does the course teach restraint or physical intervention?

No. This is a knowledge qualification about preventing, understanding and responding to behaviour that challenges. It does not train you in physical intervention or restraint. If your role needs that, your employer will arrange separate, approved training.

Is it useful in schools as well as care settings?

Yes. The principles of recognising early signs, preventing escalation, communicating calmly and supporting someone after an incident apply in schools, care homes, supported living and health settings alike.

Do I need to be working with people whose behaviour challenges?

No. All five units are knowledge units assessed by written work, so you can take the course before starting a role, or alongside a job in another sector.

How is this different from the course on distressed behaviour in children?

This certificate covers behaviour that challenges in general, across adults and young people, in care, support and education settings. Lift College also offers a Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Distressed Behaviour in Children, which focuses on children and young people.
