Can I use Functional Skills Level 2 instead of GCSEs to meet the entry requirements?

If you do not hold GCSEs at grade 4/C, you can complete Functional Skills Level 2 assessments — which are online and taken when you are ready — and use these to meet the entry requirement for level 2 and level 3 teaching and childcare qualifications.

Does the provider arrange a school or nursery placement for me?

Practice arrangements vary by provider. Some providers can signpost learners toward placement opportunities, but in most cases you are expected to arrange your own access to a school or nursery setting for portfolio evidence gathering. Are there any qualifications in this faculty that do not require a placement?

Level 2 teaching support certificates are sometimes achievable without a formal placement if the qualification is competence-based through written scenarios and case studies rather than direct observation. Is there a minimum age for these courses?

Most funded provision requires learners to be aged 19 or over. Most online teaching assistant and early years qualifications at level 2 and level 3 require GCSE English and Maths at grade 4/C or above, or Functional Skills Level 2 equivalent.
