Look for a Level 3 Early Years Educator diploma that the DfE lists as full and relevant at Level 3, a clear plan for your 300 placement hours, and a price you can work out in full. At Lift College you study the TQUK Level 3 Early Years Educator diploma (RQF, 610/3598/1) online with a named UK tutor, assessed by portfolio and observation with no exams, from £89.99 a month when you pay today or £99.99 a month after a 7-day free trial. The DfE lists it as full and relevant at Level 3. Alongside your online study you complete and evidence at least 300 hours in an Ofsted registered setting that follows the EYFS, employed or voluntary.
What to compare in an online Level 3 Early Years Educator course
- Full and relevant status. To be counted in EYFS staff to child ratios at Level 3, you need a qualification the DfE lists as full and relevant at Level 3, plus a suitable Level 2 English qualification, such as GCSE English grade 4 or Functional Skills English Level 2. Check the qualification number on any course you compare. Our guide to EYFS ratios and qualification requirements explains the rules.
- Placement hours. The online study sits alongside at least 300 hours in an Ofsted registered setting that follows the EYFS, covering the age ranges in the early years educator standard, where your practice is observed by your tutor or a workplace witness. Most learners do this in their own job.
- What the price covers. At Lift College your tutor, TQUK registration and certificate are included. Ask any provider whether registration and certification are in the fee.
- How you pay and how long it takes. Lift College prices are per month or per year while you study, and the typical time is 12 to 18 months at 8 to 12 hours a week plus placement. A fixed course fee is a single figure, so work out your total either way.
- Marking. Lift College marks your work in 5 to 7 working days, or 1 to 2 working days on the Boost plan.

What the diploma covers
The diploma is 70 credits from 17 mandatory units, 498 guided learning hours and 700 hours total qualification time, with no optional units. The units include safeguarding and child protection in the early years, supporting children with special educational needs and disability, promoting speech, language and communication, developing early literacy, reading and mathematical skills, and professional practice as an early years educator.
Who should choose which
- You already work or volunteer in an early years setting: your paid or voluntary hours in an Ofsted registered setting that follows the EYFS count towards the 300 placement hours, and Lift College lets you start with a 7-day free trial and pay monthly.
- You are not in an early years setting yet: the placement hours take most of the course, so ask an adviser before you enrol.
- You prefer one fixed fee: the other providers in the table listed fixed course fees when we checked.
- You want to work in a school with children over five: that is the teaching assistant route, such as the Level 3 Diploma in Supporting Teaching and Learning.
- You already hold a full and relevant Level 3: consider Level 5 or the teaching route instead.
