Decision guide

A good online Level 3 mental health course leads to a regulated qualification you can check, is marked by a tutor, and is clear that it builds knowledge rather than clinical skills. At Lift College you can study the TQUK Level 3 Certificate in Understanding Mental Health (RQF, 603/3202/5) online with a named UK tutor and no exams, for £359.99 paid in full today or £39.99 a month. Many learners finish in 4 to 6 months. It is a knowledge qualification: it is not a clinical qualification and does not qualify you to diagnose or treat mental health conditions.

What to compare in an online Level 3 mental health course

  • The exact qualification. Course titles are close. Of the providers we checked, one sells a different TQUK qualification, the Level 3 Certificate in Understanding Mental Health Care, and others sell a certificate from a different awarding body. Lift's is the TQUK Level 3 Certificate in Understanding Mental Health, 603/3202/5 on the Ofqual register.
  • Level 3 or a shorter course. A Level 2 course introduces mental health and common conditions. Level 3 goes further: the law, diagnosis and care planning in recovery, treatments, self-destructive behaviour and the role of the mental health care worker, with reflective practice. Mental health first aid courses are short training sessions on how to respond to someone in crisis, which is different again.
  • How it is assessed. Lift's certificate is assessed by written assignments and workbook questions for each unit, including a written self-assessment of your reflective practice, with no exams and no workplace observations.
  • Tutor support and what the fee includes. One provider we checked limits tutor support to 12 months, and another charges extra for printed materials. At Lift College the tutor, marking, AI Study Support, TQUK registration and certificate are included, with no timetable.

What the certificate covers

The five mandatory units are Understand mental health conditions in context; Living with a mental health condition; Understanding treatment of mental health conditions; Mental health conditions and destructive behaviour; and Understand the role of the mental health care worker. The first unit covers the main laws, such as the Mental Health Act 1983 and the Mental Capacity Act 2005 in England and Wales.

Who should choose which

  • You work as a support worker, care worker or healthcare assistant, or want to move into mental health support: a regulated Level 3 certificate is the deeper option, and you do not need to be working in mental health to start.
  • You need a short workplace course rather than a qualification: Lift College also runs mental health awareness training as a CPD course.
  • You want the same TQUK certificate from another provider: The Learning College listed it when we checked.
  • You want to try the course before you pay: Lift College has a 7-day free trial, monthly payments and no contract.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best online Level 3 mental health course?
There is no single best course for everyone. Check the exact qualification title and number, because similar titles can be different qualifications, then compare tutor support, assessment and what the fee includes. Lift College teaches the TQUK Level 3 Certificate in Understanding Mental Health (603/3202/5) online with a named UK tutor and no exams.
What is the difference between a Level 2 and a Level 3 mental health course?
A Level 2 course introduces mental health and common conditions. The Level 3 certificate goes further: the legislation, the role of diagnosis and care planning in recovery, treatments, self-destructive behaviour and the responsibilities of mental health care workers, with reflective practice.
Is a Level 3 mental health course the same as mental health first aid?
No. Mental health first aid courses are short training sessions on how to respond to someone in crisis. Lift College's Level 3 certificate is a regulated qualification on the Ofqual register that builds a deeper understanding of mental health conditions, treatment and care.
Does a Level 3 mental health course cover the Mental Health Act?
Lift College's Level 3 certificate does. The first unit covers legislation in the context of mental health conditions, including the Mental Health Act 1983 and the Mental Capacity Act 2005 in England and Wales, and how they protect people and shape their care.
Do I need to work in mental health to take a Level 3 mental health course online?
No. All five units of Lift College's certificate are knowledge units assessed by written work, so you can take the course before moving into a mental health role, or alongside a job in another sector. You need to be 16 or over.
How long does an online Level 3 mental health course take?
At Lift College many people take 4 to 6 months, studying a few hours a week. The certificate is 153 guided learning hours and 210 hours total qualification time across five units, with no timetable.
