Yes, you can do a GCSE in one year online, but only if your start date leaves about a year before a fixed exam series and you study more each week than most learners do. At Lift College most learners take 12 to 18 months per GCSE (12 to 24 months for Combined Science), studying with a named UK tutor from £39.99 a month. On the +Exams plan (£69.99 a month, £89.99 for Combined Science) we enter you and book your seat at a Tutors & Exams centre. Every course starts with a 7-day free trial, and nothing is charged until day 8.

Why the exam date matters more than your study speed

You can study as fast as you like online, but you cannot choose when you sit the exam. GCSE papers are set on a national timetable, and you sit them in person at an approved centre on the same day as school candidates. No GCSE can be sat online.

There are two exam series a year:

  • May/June: every GCSE subject. For June 2027, the first GCSE exam on the JCQ common timetable is 10 May 2027 and the last is 18 June 2027.
  • November: GCSE Mathematics and GCSE English Language only. The November 2026 papers run from 2 to 11 November 2026, with results released to candidates on 13 January 2027. November is only open to candidates aged 16 or over at the start of the academic year.

So "one year" really means: is there an exam series roughly 12 months after you start, and can you be ready for it?

GCSE English Language12 to 18 monthsMay/June and November

Most learners spend 6 to 12 hours a week. There is no minimum study time and no term dates, so you can go faster if you study more each week. Marked work comes back within 5 to 7 working days, which helps you keep a quick pace.

Entry deadlines: when you need to be ready

You do not need to be ready by exam day; you need to be entered by the deadline, which is months earlier. JCQ's published key dates give:

Exam seriesFinal date for entriesExams run
November 2026 (Maths and English Language only)4 October 2026 (now passed)2 to 11 November 2026
June 2027 (all subjects)21 February 202710 May to 18 June 2027

Later series dates are not yet on the JCQ key dates page, so check it before you plan for 2028. On +Exams, Lift College submits your entry before the deadline for the series you choose and books your seat. If you are working as a private candidate, our guide on how to sit GCSEs as a private candidate explains the steps.

Worked timeline: from enrolment month to a realistic exam series

The table below uses Lift's typical 12 to 18 months and the series pattern above. "Faster" means studying more each week than most learners.

You enrolRealistic series at typical paceFaster optionNovember option (Maths or English Language only)
October 2026June 2028 (about 20 months)June 2027 (about 8 months; entry by 21 February 2027)November 2027 (about 13 months)
January 2027June 2028 (about 17 months)June 2027 is about 5 months away, which is very tightNovember 2027 (about 10 months, faster than typical)
April 2027June 2028 (about 14 months)None sooner for May/June subjectsNovember 2027 (about 7 months, very fast)
July 2027June 2028 (about 11 months, slightly faster than typical)Not needed: June 2028 is already close to one yearNovember 2028 (about 16 months)

Two patterns stand out. First, if you start between roughly April and July, the next May/June series lands 11 to 14 months later, close to the one-year mark. Second, Maths and English Language give you a second chance each year through November, which is why they are the subjects where a one-year plan is most achievable for adults.

For Combined Science, six papers across biology, chemistry and physics make one year ambitious; plan for 12 to 24 months.

What it takes to finish in a year

  • Start on the right side of the deadline. Count back from the entry date, not the exam date. For June 2027, your entry must be in by 21 February 2027.
  • Study more hours each week. One year is at the fast end of Lift's typical range, so most people need to study above the 6 to 12 hour average.
  • Use your tutor's readiness check. Before entry you sit a timed mock paper and get a written summary of what to focus on.
  • Choose the right subject. If you need maths or English quickly and a GCSE is not specified by name, compare Functional Skills Level 2, which typically takes 8 to 16 weeks with an on-screen exam.

What it costs to do a GCSE in a year

Study is £39.99 a month or £407.99 a year. +Exams is £69.99 a month or £713.99 a year (Combined Science £89.99 a month or £917.99 a year), with exam entry and centre fees included and your seat booked for you. Exam entry is only on +Exams. Monthly +Exams has a 9-month expected term because exam fees are built in; you can cancel any time with no exit fee, but unused exam credit is forfeited. Annual billing saves 15%. There is no contract and no credit check, and every payment has a 14-day money-back guarantee. Frequently asked questions

Can you do a GCSE in one year online?

Yes, if an exam series falls about a year after you start and you study more each week than most learners. Lift College learners typically take 12 to 18 months per GCSE, or 12 to 24 months for Combined Science.

Can I do a GCSE in six months?

It is possible only if you already know much of the content and an entry deadline is still open. For most adults six months is too short, and the fixed exam dates often mean waiting for the next series anyway.

When is the entry deadline for the June 2027 GCSE exams?

JCQ lists 21 February 2027 as the deadline for entries for the June 2027 series. On Lift College's +Exams plan we submit your entry before the deadline and book your seat at a Tutors & Exams centre.

Which GCSEs can I sit in November?

Only GCSE Mathematics and GCSE English Language. The November series is open to candidates aged 16 or over at the start of the academic year.

Can I sit my GCSE exam online?

No. GCSE exams are always sat in person at an approved centre. Lift College's exam partner, Tutors & Exams, has 10 centres approved for GCSEs in England.

Does studying faster cost more?

No. You pay monthly for as long as you study, so finishing sooner means fewer payments. Monthly +Exams has a 9-month expected term because exam fees are built in. Annual billing saves 15%.
