You can resit any GCSE at any age. The most common route for adults is an online course such as GCSE Mathematics (AQA 8300) or GCSE English Language (AQA 8700), studied flexibly from home, with the exam sat in person at an approved centre. Exams run nationally in May and June, and a November resit series runs for Maths and English Language for learners aged 16 or over. There is no limit on how many times you can resit, and your best result is the one that counts.
Who needs to resit a GCSE?
Most adult resits are GCSE Maths and English Language, because a grade 4 (the old grade C) in both is the gateway requirement for:
- Nursing and midwifery degrees - universities ask for grade 4 in English and Maths (often Science too)
- Teacher training - a grade 4 in English and Maths is a Department for Education entry requirement for initial teacher training, plus Science for primary teaching
- Higher and degree apprenticeships - most providers require grade 4 in English and Maths, or ask you to achieve it during the apprenticeship
- Access to Higher Education Diplomas - many courses ask for English and Maths at grade 4 or equivalent
If your qualification is older, grades are comparable: under the 9 to 1 system used in England since 2017, a grade 4 is a standard pass and matches the bottom of the old grade C (Ofqual's published grade comparability).

What are my options for resitting?
Swipe to compare →
| Route | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Online course + exam centre | Study flexibly from home, sit the exam in person at an approved centre | Adults working around a job or family |
| Further education college | Weekly classes, usually September enrolment, one academic year | Learners who want a classroom and may qualify for funded places |
| Private candidate | Self-study, then book the exam directly with a local exam centre | Confident self-studiers who only need the exam entry |
With an online course you still sit the same exam as school candidates and receive the same certificate. Lift College includes exam centre support with its GCSE courses, helping you find and book an approved centre near you.
If you were years away from maths or English and want a faster, adult-focused alternative, a Functional Skills Level 2 qualification is accepted in place of GCSE grade 4 by many universities and employers, though not all, so check your destination's requirements first.
When can I resit a GCSE?
- May and June - the main national exam series for every GCSE subject
- November - a resit series for GCSE Maths and English Language only, open to learners aged 16 or over on entry
Entries close months before the exam: typically early October for the November series and 21 February for the summer series (JCQ entry deadlines). Starting an online course in autumn gives you a comfortable run at the summer exams.
How much does a GCSE resit cost?
As a private candidate or online learner you pay the exam centre an entry fee, which for GCSE Maths typically sits between £225 and £325 per subject depending on the centre, plus your course fees. We break down every fee line in our full guide to the cost of resitting GCSEs as an adult. College classroom places can be free for 19 plus learners who do not yet hold a grade 4, under the government's adult legal entitlement to English and maths study.
How do I resit as a private candidate?
If you only need the exam entry, you can enter yourself: find an exam centre that accepts private candidates, confirm the specification code your course follows (for example AQA 8300 for Maths), pay the entry fee before the deadline, and sit the papers on the national timetable. Our guide to sitting GCSEs as a private candidate walks through each step, including finding centres and access arrangements.
Which subjects can I resit online?
Lift College offers online GCSE courses in Mathematics (AQA 8300, Foundation and Higher tier), English Language (AQA 8700), Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Combined Science, English Literature, History, Psychology, Sociology, Business Studies and Film Studies. Maths and English Language are the two with a November resit window; every other subject is examined in the summer series only, so plan your start date around a May or June exam.
For Maths, your tier choice matters on a resit. Foundation tier covers grades 1 to 5, Higher tier grades 3 to 9. If you need a grade 4 or 5 for a university or training course, Foundation tier is usually the safer resit route, because the same grade is available from more accessible papers.
How long does it take to prepare?
Most adults preparing for a Maths or English resit study 3 to 6 hours a week for 6 to 9 months. If you sat the subject recently and narrowly missed a grade 4, a focused 3 month run at the November series can be enough. Online courses let you set the pace: Lift College courses are self-paced with real UK tutors, a free 7 day trial, and nothing charged until day 8.
Step by step: your resit plan
- Check what your destination actually requires. Some universities and employers accept Functional Skills Level 2 or equivalence tests instead of a GCSE resit.
- Choose your route - online course, college class or private candidate entry.
- Confirm the specification code your course follows (AQA 8300 for Maths, AQA 8700 for English Language at Lift College) so your exam entry matches your study.
- Book your exam centre early. Entries for the summer series close around 21 February; November series entries close in early October.
- Set a weekly study rhythm of 3 to 6 hours and work backwards from the exam date.
- Request access arrangements (extra time, a reader, a scribe) at entry if you had them before or think you qualify - the exam centre handles the application.

Frequently asked questions
Can I resit a GCSE at any age?
Yes. There is no upper age limit for GCSE entry. Adults enter through an online provider, a college or as a private candidate.
Do universities care that I resat a GCSE?
No. UCAS applications show the grade you achieved; a resat grade 4 or above meets entry requirements exactly as a first-attempt grade does.
Can I resit just the papers I failed?
No. GCSEs are linear, so you resit the whole qualification and all its papers in one exam series.
Is Functional Skills Level 2 easier than a GCSE resit?
It is different rather than easier: shorter, more practical, and available year round. Many universities and employers accept it in place of GCSE grade 4, but not all, so check first.
Can I do the exam online from home?
No. GCSE exams must be sat in person at an approved exam centre, even if you study entirely online.
