Functional Skills English Level 2 Online Exam Explained

Functional Skills English Level 2 is assessed in three parts: a 60-minute reading exam, a 60-minute writing exam, and a 20 to 30 minute speaking, listening and communicating assessment. With Lift College all three can be completed online: reading and writing are on-screen TQUK exams with remote invigilation (or at a TQUK-approved centre if you prefer), and the speaking assessment is run online by Lift College and quality assured by TQUK. Each part is pass or fail, and you need all three to receive the Ofqual-regulated Level 2 certificate.

The reading and writing papers are set and marked by TQUK, the awarding organisation for the Functional Skills Qualification in English at Level 2 (610/2625/6). Speaking, listening and communicating is assessed by Lift College against TQUK's criteria and quality assured by TQUK.

Can you take Functional Skills English Level 2 entirely online?

Yes. Reading and writing are taken on-screen at home with remote invigilation: TQUK uses a record-and-review system, so your webcam and screen are recorded during the exam and reviewed afterwards. The speaking assessment is a scheduled online session with Lift College. You never need to travel, although you can sit the written papers at a TQUK-approved centre if you would rather.

What you need for remote invigilation:

  • A laptop or desktop (not a phone or tablet) with a working webcam and microphone
  • A stable internet connection
  • A quiet room where you will not be interrupted, with a clear desk
  • Photo ID to show to the camera before you start

A remotely invigilated pass leads to the same TQUK certificate as a centre-based exam.

How is each part marked?

Functional Skills is pass or fail with no grades. TQUK sets the pass mark for each reading and writing paper after marking, so the exact figure can move slightly between papers. In the writing paper, spelling, punctuation and grammar are part of what is assessed, so proofreading matters. Speaking, listening and communicating is assessed against TQUK's criteria across the two activities rather than as a percentage. More detail is on Functional Skills Level 2 pass marks by awarding body.

How do you book the exam?

With Lift College you do not book directly with TQUK. You work through the course with your tutor, who marks practice papers in 5 to 7 working days. When a timed mock shows you are ready, your tutor confirms it and Lift College books your reading and writing exams and schedules your speaking assessment. You sit when you are ready rather than waiting for a fixed exam series. Entry and one sitting of each component are included in the course price of £39.99 a month (or £407.99 in total); a resit fee applies if you need another attempt.

When do results come through?

TQUK marks the on-screen reading and writing papers and releases results to Lift College, which passes them to you as soon as they land. Turnaround varies by component and time of year. Your certificate comes from TQUK once all three components are passed and follows by post a few weeks after the final result.

What happens if you fail one part?

You resit only the part you did not pass. A learner who passes reading and speaking but misses the writing pass mark resits writing alone, and the two passes stand. There is no limit on attempts and no waiting period beyond the next available slot, though most tutors recommend at least two weeks of targeted revision first. Each resit carries a fee.

A Level 2 pass is accepted in place of GCSE English grade 4 by apprenticeships, the NHS, most employers and the majority of universities. The main exceptions are initial teacher training in England, which asks for GCSEs or a provider-approved equivalency test, and individual courses that specify GCSEs only. See who accepts Functional Skills Level 2 and confirm with your course or employer before you choose.

How should you prepare for the online exam?

  1. Read the Functional Skills English Level 2 guide for what each component measures.
  2. Practise reading questions against the clock using past papers: identify the text purpose, find evidence, and watch the question wording ("give two reasons", "explain how").
  3. Write both task types under timed conditions and proofread for spelling, punctuation and grammar last, every time.
  4. Rehearse a short presentation on a familiar topic and practise asking a follow-up question in a discussion.
  5. Check the webcam, microphone and connection on the computer you will use for the exam.
