CPD guide

You can do Prevent duty training online in the UK with Lift College. Prevent Duty Training is 1 hour of learning in 4 short modules, written for schools, colleges, universities, the NHS, local authorities, the police and prisons in England, Wales and Scotland, with the differences between the nations explained. It costs £19.99 pay once, gives you a CPD certificate issued by Lift College the same day you pass, and comes with a free refresher every 12 months. Employers look for a certificate that records the course, hours, completion date and refresh date, and Lift College's certificate shows each of these.

What employers look for in an online Prevent duty certificate

Your employer decides what Prevent training you need. The Prevent duty guidance expects specified authorities to make sure appropriate staff are trained to recognise when someone may be susceptible to radicalisation and to know how to raise a concern, and to record that training. When an employer or an inspector checks a certificate, they usually look for:

  • Content that follows the Prevent duty as it stands now. Section 26 of the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015, the current Prevent duty guidance and, for schools and colleges in England, Keeping Children Safe in Education.
  • A clear, verifiable record. The course name, hours of learning and completion date, with a way to confirm the certificate is genuine.
  • The essentials every member of staff needs. How radicalisation happens, the signs to notice, the Notice, Check, Share approach and how a referral to Channel or a Prevent Multi-Agency Panel works.
  • A refresh date. The guidance recommends that staff with Prevent responsibilities refresh at least every two years, and most settings refresh awareness training every year with safeguarding, so a refresh date matters.

Lift College's certificate does each of these. It records Prevent Duty Training, 1 hour of learning, your completion date and a recommended refresh date 12 months on, with a unique certificate number and a verification link. Your designated safeguarding lead or Prevent lead will also show you the referral route for your own setting, and the course prepares you to use it.

What the Lift College course covers

There are 4 short modules, each with a knowledge check, then a multiple choice final test with an 80% pass mark and unlimited free retakes.

  1. What the Prevent duty is. Section 26 of the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015, the specified authorities it applies to, and how the duty sits within safeguarding rather than policing.
  2. How radicalisation happens. Push and pull factors, grievance, grooming by extremist groups and the part online platforms play. Why there is no single profile of a person at risk.
  3. Notice: the signs. Changes in behaviour, friendships, language and online activity that may suggest someone is vulnerable, and why one sign on its own proves nothing.
  4. Check and share. Talking to your designated lead, what Channel in England and Wales and Prevent Multi-Agency Panels in Scotland do, how a referral works, what happens next, and records and confidentiality.

By the end you can explain what the Prevent duty asks of your organisation, describe how radicalisation happens, notice possible signs without jumping to conclusions, and raise a concern through the right route in your setting.

The law and guidance it is written around

  • Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015, section 26 (England, Wales and Scotland). Specified authorities must, in the exercise of their functions, have due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism. The duty does not extend to Northern Ireland.
  • Prevent duty guidance (England and Wales, with separate guidance for Scotland). Statutory guidance that expects specified authorities to train appropriate staff, record that training, and have a clear route for referrals. It names the free GOV.UK Prevent duty training offered by the Home Office.
  • Keeping Children Safe in Education (England). Statutory safeguarding guidance for schools and colleges, which treats protecting children from radicalisation as part of their wider safeguarding duties and expects all staff to have Prevent awareness training.

The course explains where England and Wales differ from Scotland, including the different support panels, so you can follow the arrangements that apply where you work.

Frequently asked questions

Which online Prevent duty certificate do UK employers accept?
Your employer decides, guided by the Prevent duty guidance and, in schools and colleges in England, Keeping Children Safe in Education. Look for a certificate that records the course, hours, completion date and refresh date and can be verified. Lift College's certificate shows all of these, with a unique number and verification link.
Is online Prevent duty training valid?
Yes, for awareness training. The guidance leaves the type and frequency of training to each organisation's assessment of its needs. This course covers the Prevent awareness knowledge expected of frontline staff. Your designated lead will also show you the referral route for your own setting, and the course prepares you to use it.
How often should Prevent duty training be done?
The guidance does not set one fixed interval for all staff. It recommends that people with Prevent responsibilities refresh at least every two years, and most schools, colleges and NHS trusts refresh awareness training every year alongside safeguarding. Lift College recommends every 12 months, and the refresher is free.
What is Notice, Check, Share?
It is the approach the Home Office training teaches for raising a concern. Notice a change that worries you, check it with your designated lead or Prevent lead rather than acting alone, and share what you know so the right people can decide whether support is needed. The course works through each step.
What is Channel?
Channel is the voluntary, confidential programme in England and Wales that supports people at risk of being drawn into terrorism. Scotland uses Prevent Multi-Agency Panels. Both bring agencies together to agree support for the person, and neither is a criminal process. A referral does not create a criminal record.
Does the Prevent duty apply in Northern Ireland?
No. Section 26 of the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015 applies in England, Wales and Scotland. This course is written for those three nations and explains where England and Wales differ from Scotland, including the different panels that arrange support for a person who has been referred.
Does it count towards my CPD?
Yes. The course is 1 hour of learning, shown on your CPD certificate issued by Lift College, so you can log the hour in your CPD record. The certificate also shows your completion date and a recommended refresh date 12 months on, with a unique certificate number your employer can verify.
