A-Level Physics: Everything You Need to Know

A complete 2026 guide to A-level Physics: the linear structure, three-paper format, practical endorsement, maths content, board differences and how to prepare as an online learner.

A-level Physics is one of the most respected A-levels for university admissions and career switching. It is also one of the more demanding. This guide covers how the qualification is built, what the three papers test, how the practical endorsement works, and how to prepare online.

The linear structure

A-level Physics is a linear qualification. That means all three papers are taken at the end of the two-year course, in the same exam series, and marked as a single entry. There is no coursework and no modular exam. You cannot bank an AS unit and carry it forward.

The practical endorsement is a separate award, running alongside the A-level. You complete 12 required practicals over the course. Each is signed off by an assessor at your centre. The endorsement is reported as Pass or Fail on your certificate, not folded into the A-level grade.

What each paper tests

The content split differs slightly between boards. Taking AQA as the example: Paper 1 covers measurements, particles and radiation, waves, mechanics and materials, and electricity. Paper 2 covers further mechanics, thermal physics, fields (gravitational, electric and magnetic), and nuclear physics. Paper 3 covers practical skills and a chosen option (astrophysics, medical physics, applied physics, turning points in physics, or engineering physics).

Each paper is two hours, worth 85 marks on AQA, and mixes short-answer, calculation and extended-response questions. Multiple choice appears on Paper 3. Questions on practical skills can appear on any paper, because practical technique is assessable throughout.

The maths behind the physics

Around 40% of A-level Physics marks require applied maths at a level equivalent to A-level Maths. That includes rearranging equations, applying trigonometry to vectors, using logarithms and exponentials for radioactive decay and capacitor discharge, and interpreting rates of change. If you are studying Physics without Maths in parallel, plan for a structured maths track alongside your Physics track.

The single biggest score-shifter in the last month of preparation is a maths refresh: 10 minutes of algebraic manipulation at the start of every study session, focused on the equations you have not touched recently. Physics candidates lose marks by algebraic error at least as often as by physics error.

The required practicals

The 12 required practicals are set by the board and cover techniques you must be able to describe and evaluate in the exam: measuring g with a free-fall method, determining the Young modulus of a wire, investigating standing waves on a string, measuring specific heat capacity, investigating capacitor discharge, measuring the wavelength of a laser using a diffraction grating, and so on.

Even if you complete the practicals in person, the marks come from written questions. Practise describing method, identifying variables, spotting sources of error, and evaluating whether a result is valid. The written skill is what earns marks; the physical skill is what earns the endorsement.

How the boards differ

AQA is the most widely used A-level Physics board in England and has the largest bank of accessible past papers. OCR offers two specifications: OCR A is content-led and follows a broadly conventional physics syllabus; OCR B ("Advancing Physics") is context-led and organised around ideas rather than topic labels. Pearson Edexcel sits between them, with a topic structure similar to AQA but slightly more emphasis on modelling.

Studying A-level Physics online

The written content, past papers, mock exams, tutor feedback and maths support all work well online. The two structural challenges are the practical endorsement and the pace of maths content.

The practical endorsement requires supervised sessions with recorded evidence. University entry requirements

For Physics or Engineering degrees at Russell Group universities, typical offers are AAA to A*AA with Physics and Maths compulsory. Oxford and Cambridge typically require A*A*A, often with Further Maths. Some Engineering degrees require Chemistry rather than Physics as a third subject.

For allied science degrees such as Medical Physics, Radiography or Optometry, typical offers are ABB to AAB, usually with Physics or another science plus Maths. Non-Russell Group universities often accept BBB to ABB. The practical endorsement Pass is required by almost all UK universities offering science degrees.
