About this course

CDM Regulations Training

You can do cdm training online in the UK with Lift College's CDM Regulations Training course. It is 2 hours of learning in 5 short modules, covering what the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 are and when they apply, the duty holders from client to worker and what each must do, when a project must be notified to the HSE, pre-construction information, the construction phase plan, the health and safety file, and the site standards for welfare, access and managing the work. It costs £19.99, pay once, and your CPD certificate issued by Lift College is ready the same day you pass. Lift College recommends a refresh every 3 years, and the refresher is free.

Construction has one of the highest rates of fatal and serious injury of any industry in Great Britain, and most of the harm comes from work that was planned badly or not planned at all: falls from height, being struck by moving plant or falling materials, collapses, and long term ill health from dust, noise and vibration. CDM 2015 puts the duty to plan, manage and coordinate health and safety on everyone who has a hand in a project, from the client who commissions the work to the designer who draws it and the contractor who builds it. It applies to every construction project, however small, including work for homeowners.

This course covers what the regulations expect of each duty holder and the documents that run through a project: pre-construction information, the construction phase plan, the health and safety file and the notification to the HSE. You learn when a principal designer and principal contractor must be appointed, what designers must do to remove or reduce risk, what a compliant site looks like, and what happens when the duties are ignored. It is written for people who commission, design, plan or manage building, refurbishment, maintenance and demolition work across the UK.

By the end you can
  • Explain what CDM 2015 covers, the work it applies to and why it was introduced
  • Identify the duty holders on a project: client, domestic client, principal designer, principal contractor, designer, contractor and worker
  • Describe the duties of each duty holder and when a principal designer and principal contractor must be appointed
  • Recognise when a project must be notified to the HSE and how the notification is made
  • Explain what pre-construction information, the construction phase plan and the health and safety file contain and who prepares each
  • Describe how designers eliminate, reduce and control risk through design decisions
  • Identify the welfare, access, site organisation and management standards a construction site must meet
  • Recognise the consequences of breaching CDM 2015 and the role of the HSE and local authorities in enforcement
Modules

5 short modules, 2 hours in total.

  1. What CDM 2015 is and when it applies

Why the regulations exist, how CDM 2015 replaced the 2007 regulations, what counts as construction work, including maintenance, refurbishment and demolition, and how the regulations apply to domestic projects. Notification to the HSE when a project will last more than 30 working days with more than 20 workers at once, or exceed 500 person days.

    Knowledge check
  2. The duty holders and their duties

Clients and domestic clients, principal designers, principal contractors, designers, contractors and workers. Knowledge check
  3. Planning a safe project

Pre-construction information the client must provide, surveys and existing records, the construction phase plan that every project needs before work starts, what it must cover for the size and risk of the job, and the health and safety file handed over at the end for future work on the structure.

    Knowledge check
  4. Design and risk

The general principles of prevention, how designers eliminate hazards and reduce the risks that remain, designing for safe construction, cleaning, maintenance and demolition, and how design information is passed to the principal designer and contractors.

    Knowledge check
  5. Safe sites and enforcement

Welfare facilities, site security and access, induction, information and training for workers, consulting and engaging the workforce, cooperation and coordination between duty holders, and what happens when CDM is breached: HSE inspections, improvement and prohibition notices, fee for intervention and prosecution.

Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015

Applies to all construction work in England, Wales and Scotland, from a small domestic job to a major project. Clients, designers and contractors must plan, manage and coordinate health and safety, and a principal designer and principal contractor must be appointed when more than one contractor works on the project. Northern Ireland has its own Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2016, which impose the same duties.

HSE L153: Managing health and safety in construction

The HSE's guidance on CDM 2015, with the regulations printed alongside. It explains what each duty holder must do, what pre-construction information, the construction phase plan and the health and safety file should contain, and the standards a site must meet. Following it is the normal way to show that the regulations have been complied with.

Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974

Applies in England, Wales and Scotland. Employers must provide the information, instruction, training and supervision needed to keep employees safe, so far as is reasonably practicable (section 2), and breaches of CDM 2015 are prosecuted under this Act. Northern Ireland has the same duty in the Health and Safety at Work (Northern Ireland) Order 1978.

HSE construction and CDM 2015 guidance pages

The HSE's plain language pages for each duty holder, with the online form for notifying a project (F10) and summaries for clients, designers and contractors. A good starting point for anyone new to a CDM role.

What our learners say

Stories from Lift College learners on our qualifications, in their own words.

“I had been a care assistant for four years without a formal qualification. Lift College made the whole process straightforward, my assessor visited regularly and I completed my Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care in just over a year. I was promoted to senior care worker the month after I qualified.”

“My employer was clear, I needed GCSE English to move into a supervisory role. Lift College helped me find the right exam board and an exam centre five minutes from home. Passed grade 4. Got the promotion.”

“My employer needed me to have Level 2 maths before they could register me on the Level 3 apprenticeship programme. Lift College was fast, the tutor was brilliant, and I resit my maths once after a near-miss and passed the second time. The whole thing took twelve weeks.”

FAQ

Questions about CDM Regulations Training

Is online CDM training valid?

Your employer, or your own position as a duty holder, decides what training you need. CDM 2015 asks every duty holder to have the skills, knowledge and experience for their role, and clients must check this before appointing anyone. This course gives the knowledge of the regulations and documents; competence in a specific role also depends on your qualifications and experience in the work itself.

Who needs CDM training?

Anyone with a role on a construction project: clients and their estates or facilities teams, architects and engineers acting as designers, principal designers, principal contractors, contractors and site managers. Domestic clients do not usually need it, because their duties pass to the contractor or designer, but anyone taking on those duties does.

How often should CDM training be refreshed?

The regulations do not fix an interval. Lift College recommends refreshing every 3 years, or sooner if your role changes or the HSE updates its guidance, and the refresher is free.

Does this course make me a principal designer or site manager?

No. It explains what the regulations ask of each duty holder so you can take part in a project with confidence. Acting as principal designer or managing a site needs the design or construction qualifications and experience for that work, and the client or employer decides what else is required.

How do I know if my project must be notified to the HSE?

Notify when the construction phase is expected to last longer than 30 working days and have more than 20 workers working at the same time at any point, or when it will exceed 500 person days of work. The client is responsible for notifying, using the HSE's online F10 form, before the construction phase begins. The course explains this with worked examples.

How long do I keep access?

You keep your access for as long as Lift College offers the course, and never less than 3 years from the day you buy. Your certificate PDF is yours to keep.

What is the free refresher?

Lift College recommends refreshing this course every 3 years. When your date comes round, you can retake the latest version free and get a new certificate. We email you 30 days before.

Does it count towards my CPD?

Yes. The course is 2 hours of learning, shown on your CPD certificate issued by Lift College, so you can log the hours in your CPD record.

Can I get my money back?

Yes. Ask within 14 days of paying and we refund you in full.

Can my employer pay?

Yes. Your receipt shows the course, the date and the amount paid, and you can pass it to your employer. Buying for a team? Open a free organisation account: every course is £16.99, and you can pay by card or invoice with your PO.

Can my team do this course in another language?

Yes, on an organisation account with 10 or more places. Your team can study CDM Regulations Training in Polish, Romanian, Punjabi, Urdu or Welsh, prepared within 1 working day of your order. The final test and the certificate stay in the English course name, so the certificate is the one every employer recognises. Tell us the languages you need when you order or ask for a quote.
