About this course

COSHH Training

You can do COSHH training online in the UK with Lift College's COSHH Training course. It is 1.5 hours of learning in 5 short modules, covering what counts as a hazardous substance, the hazard pictograms, how substances enter the body, reading a safety data sheet, the COSHH assessment, the hierarchy of controls, personal protective equipment, storage and spills. It costs £19.99, pay once, and your CPD certificate issued by Lift College is ready the same day you pass. Lift College recommends a refresh every 12 months, and the refresher is free.

Cleaning chemicals, dusts, fumes, oils and biological agents are in almost every workplace. Thousands of people a year develop asthma, dermatitis or worse from exposure that could have been controlled. COSHH requires employers to assess the risk and give the people who work with these substances suitable information, instruction and training.

This course covers what COSHH expects every worker who handles hazardous substances to know. You learn the hazard pictograms, how substances enter and harm the body, how to find what you need on a label and a safety data sheet, what your COSHH assessment tells you, and how the controls, from substitution to ventilation to gloves, fit together. It is written for workplaces across the UK, with the law for Great Britain and Northern Ireland explained.

By the end you can
  • Explain what COSHH covers and what it leaves out
  • Recognise the nine hazard pictograms and what each warns of
  • Describe the routes by which substances enter the body
  • Find the information you need on a label and a safety data sheet
  • Follow the control measures set out in a COSHH assessment
  • Select, use, store and dispose of personal protective equipment correctly
  • Store substances safely and respond to a spill or exposure

Which online COSHH certificate do employers accept?

Your employer decides what COSHH training you need, based on its COSHH assessments. Regulation 12 of the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002, and the 2003 Regulations in Northern Ireland, require suitable and sufficient information, instruction and training for anyone who may be exposed to a hazardous substance. A good certificate records the course, hours, completion date and refresh date, and can be verified. The content should cover hazard pictograms, safety data sheets, routes of exposure, the hierarchy of control and what to do in a spill or an emergency.

Lift College's certificate does each of these: it names COSHH Training, shows 1.5 hours of learning, your completion date and a refresh date 12 months on, with a unique number and verification link. The refresher is free.

FAQ

Questions about COSHH Training

Is online COSHH training valid?

Your employer decides what training you need. COSHH requires suitable and sufficient information, instruction and training for anyone who may be exposed. This course covers that knowledge, and your employer will add the specific substances, assessments and controls for your own workplace.

How often should COSHH training be done?

The regulations ask for training to be adapted to take account of significant changes and repeated as appropriate. Lift College recommends refreshing every 12 months, and the refresher is free.

What substances does COSHH cover?

Chemicals and products containing them, fumes, dusts, vapours, mists, gases, nanotechnology, biological agents and germs that cause disease. Asbestos, lead and radioactive substances have their own regulations.

What is a safety data sheet?

A document the supplier must provide for a hazardous chemical. It has 16 sections covering hazards, composition, first aid, fire fighting, spills, handling and storage, exposure controls and disposal. Your COSHH assessment draws on it.

Do I need COSHH training if I only use cleaning products?

If a product carries a hazard pictogram, COSHH applies. Bleach, descalers, oven cleaners and many sanitisers are hazardous substances, and mixing them can produce toxic gas. The course covers exactly these everyday risks.

How long do I keep access?

You keep your access for as long as Lift College offers the course, and never less than 3 years from the day you buy. Your certificate PDF is yours to keep.

What is the free refresher?
