About this course

Dementia Awareness Training

You can do dementia awareness training online in the UK with Lift College's Dementia Awareness Training course. It is 1.5 hours of learning in 5 short modules, covering what dementia is and the main types, how it affects memory, thinking, perception and behaviour, person centred care, communication that works, supporting someone who is distressed, the environment, capacity and consent, and support for families and carers. It costs £19.99, pay once, and your CPD certificate issued by Lift College is ready the same day you pass. Lift College recommends a refresh every 3 years, and the refresher is free.

Around a million people in the UK live with dementia, and most of them are supported by family, care workers and staff who meet them in shops, banks, surgeries and on buses. How those people respond makes the difference between a good day and a frightening one. Awareness training is the starting point for everyone who works with the public or in care.

This course covers what every worker who supports or serves people with dementia should know. You learn what dementia is and the main types, how it affects the way a person remembers, thinks, perceives and feels, what person centred care means in practice, how to communicate when words are hard, how to respond when someone is distressed, how the environment helps or hinders, what the Mental Capacity Act means for everyday decisions, and how to support families. It is written for settings across the UK.

By the end you can
  • Explain what dementia is, the main types and how they differ from normal ageing
  • Describe how dementia affects memory, language, perception, mood and behaviour
  • Put person centred care into practice by learning who the person is and what matters to them
  • Communicate in ways that reduce confusion and distress
  • Respond to behaviour that challenges by looking for the unmet need behind it
  • Make an environment easier to navigate and less frightening
  • Apply the principles of the Mental Capacity Act to everyday decisions
  • Recognise the needs of family carers and where to signpost them

Which online dementia awareness certificate do employers accept?

Your employer decides what dementia training you need. In England the Care Quality Commission expects registered providers to have staff with the training they need for the people they support, and the Dementia Training Standards Framework describes the awareness that everyone who may meet a person with dementia should have. A good certificate records the course, hours, completion date and refresh date, and can be verified. The content should cover what dementia is and is not, the common types, communication, the person behind the diagnosis, and the Mental Capacity Act 2005 or the Adults with Incapacity (Scotland) Act 2000 where you work.

Lift College's certificate does each of these: it names Dementia Awareness Training, shows 1.5 hours of learning, your completion date and a refresh date 3 years on, with a unique number and verification link. The refresher is free.

FAQ

Questions about Dementia Awareness Training

Is online dementia awareness training valid?

Your employer decides what training you need. This course covers the awareness level knowledge that care regulators and the Dementia Training Standards Framework (Tier 1) describe for everyone who works with people who may have dementia. Care staff in specialist roles will need further training.

How often should dementia awareness training be done?

There is no legal interval. Lift College recommends refreshing every 3 years, or sooner if your role changes, and the refresher is free.

Is dementia a normal part of ageing?

No. Dementia is caused by diseases that damage the brain. Age is the biggest risk factor, but most older people do not have dementia and some people develop it in their 40s and 50s.

What should I do if someone with dementia becomes distressed?

Stay calm, give them space and time, use their name, speak slowly and simply, and look for what they need: pain, hunger, the toilet, fear, noise or an unfamiliar face. Do not argue about facts. The course covers this in detail.

Does this course cover the Care Certificate standard?

It covers the knowledge in Standard 9 (awareness of mental health, dementia and learning disability) as it relates to dementia. If you are new to care, the Care Certificate course covers all 15 standards.

How long do I keep access?

You keep your access for as long as Lift College offers the course, and never less than 3 years from the day you buy. Your certificate PDF is yours to keep.

What is the free refresher?

Lift College recommends refreshing this course every 3 years. When your date comes round, you can retake the latest version free and get a new certificate. We email you 30 days before.

Does it count towards my CPD?

Yes. The course is 1.5 hours of learning, shown on your CPD certificate issued by Lift College, so you can log the hours in your CPD record.

Can I get my money back?

Yes. Ask within 14 days of paying and we refund you in full.

Can my employer pay?

Yes. Your receipt shows the course, the date and the amount paid, and you can pass it to your employer. Buying for a team? Ask about team enrolment and the team will help.
