About this course

Lone Working Training

You can do lone working training online in the UK with Lift College's Lone Working Training course. It is 1 hour of learning in 4 short modules, covering who counts as a lone worker, the particular risks of working alone, what the law expects of employers and of you, dynamic risk assessment, check in and buddy systems, travelling and visiting safely, personal safety and conflict, and what to do if you are injured, threatened or taken ill. It costs £19.99, pay once, and your CPD certificate issued by Lift College is ready the same day you pass. Lift College recommends a refresh every 3 years, and the refresher is free.

Up to eight million people in the UK work alone for some or all of their day: care workers on home visits, housing officers, security guards, delivery drivers, shop staff opening up, engineers on site. Being alone does not make the work more dangerous in itself, but it means nobody is there to help, and that changes how risks must be managed.

This course covers what the Health and Safety Executive's guidance on lone working expects. You learn who the lone worker is, the risks that matter most when nobody else is there, what your employer must do and what you must do, how to assess risk dynamically as a situation changes, how check in and buddy systems work, how to travel and visit safely, how to defuse conflict and leave, and what to do in an emergency. It is written for workplaces across the UK.

By the end you can
  • Explain who counts as a lone worker and the particular risks of working alone
  • Describe what the law and HSE guidance expect of employers and lone workers
  • Carry out a dynamic risk assessment before and during a task or visit
  • Use check in, buddy and lone worker device systems properly
  • Plan travel and visits to reduce risk, including parking, routes and unfamiliar premises
  • Recognise the warning signs of conflict and use distance, tone and exit to stay safe
  • Respond to an accident, illness, threat or emergency when alone

Which online lone working certificate do employers accept?

Your employer decides what lone working training you need, based on its risk assessment. The Health and Safety at Work Act and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, with the 2000 Regulations in Northern Ireland, expect employers to assess the risks of working alone, put controls in place and train the people affected, and HSE guidance INDG73 sets out what good practice looks like. A good certificate records the course, hours, completion date and refresh date, and can be verified. The content should cover dynamic risk assessment, check in systems and escalation, personal safety and conflict, and what to do after an incident.

Lift College's certificate does each of these: it names Lone Working Training, shows 1 hour of learning, your completion date and a refresh date 3 years on, with a unique number and verification link. The refresher is free.

FAQ

Questions about Lone Working Training

Is online lone working training valid?

Your employer decides what training you need. HSE guidance expects lone workers to be trained to deal with the risks they face. This course covers that knowledge, and your employer will add your own check in procedures, devices and escalation contacts.

How often should lone working training be done?

There is no legal interval, but procedures and devices change. Lift College recommends refreshing every 3 years, sooner if your role changes, and the refresher is free.

Is lone working legal?

Yes. It is legal to work alone in most jobs, provided the employer has assessed the risks and put controls in place. A few activities, such as some work in confined spaces or with certain high risk equipment, must not be done alone.

What is a dynamic risk assessment?

The assessment you make on the spot as a situation unfolds: who is there, how they are behaving, where the exits are, whether to continue. It sits on top of your employer's written risk assessment and gives you permission to stop and leave.

What should a check in system do?

Record when you start and finish a task or visit, expect contact at agreed times, and trigger an agreed escalation if you miss a check in: a call, then a named colleague, then the emergency services if needed. A system nobody acts on is no system at all.

How long do I keep access?

You keep your access for as long as Lift College offers the course, and never less than 3 years from the day you buy. Your certificate PDF is yours to keep.

What is the free refresher?

Lift College recommends refreshing this course every 3 years. When your date comes round, you can retake the latest version free and get a new certificate. We email you 30 days before.

Does it count towards my CPD?

Yes. The course is 1 hour of learning, shown on your CPD certificate issued by Lift College, so you can log the hours in your CPD record.

Can I get my money back?

Yes. Ask within 14 days of paying and we refund you in full.

Can my employer pay?

Yes. Your receipt shows the course, the date and the amount paid, and you can pass it to your employer. Buying for a team? Ask about team enrolment and the team will help.
