Neurodiversity Awareness Training
You can do neurodiversity training online in the UK with Lift College's Neurodiversity Awareness Training course. It is 2 hours of learning in 5 short modules, covering what neurodiversity and neurodivergence mean, how autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia and Tourette's syndrome can affect the way people experience work, the strengths neurodivergent colleagues bring, what the Equality Act 2010 expects of employers including the duty to make reasonable adjustments, Access to Work, and the practical changes to recruitment, communication, the working environment and management that make a workplace inclusive. It costs £19.99, pay once, and your CPD certificate issued by Lift College is ready the same day you pass. Lift College recommends a refresh every 3 years, and the refresher is free.
A significant share of the UK workforce is neurodivergent, and most of them work in organisations whose recruitment, meetings, offices and systems were designed around one way of thinking. The result is talent that is screened out at interview, colleagues who spend their energy masking rather than working, performance and conduct processes started for what is really an unmet need for adjustment, and claims under the Equality Act that could have been avoided with a conversation. Acas and the Equality and Human Rights Commission both make clear that employers do not need a diagnosis in front of them before they act: the duty to consider adjustments arises when the employer knows, or could reasonably be expected to know, that someone is at a disadvantage.
This course covers what neurodiversity means and the common forms of neurodivergence without turning anyone into a label, how each can show up at work and the strengths that come with them, the law and the reasonable adjustments that follow from it, and how to recruit, manage, communicate and design a workplace that works for different minds. It does not teach you to diagnose or identify neurodivergent people, and it says so: diagnosis is for clinicians, and disclosure is the individual's choice. It is written for managers, HR and recruitment staff, team leaders and colleagues across the UK.
- Explain what neurodiversity and neurodivergence mean and why the difference between a medical and a social model of disability matters at work
- Describe how autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia and Tourette's syndrome can affect the way a colleague experiences work, and the strengths that often come with them
- Recognise why you should never attempt to diagnose or label a colleague, and how to respond when someone chooses to disclose
- Describe when the Equality Act 2010 protects a neurodivergent worker and what the duty to make reasonable adjustments requires of an employer
- Identify reasonable adjustments to recruitment, induction, communication, the working environment, workload and performance management
- Apply inclusive practice to everyday work: clear instructions, meeting design, written follow up, sensory considerations and flexible ways of working
- Explain how Access to Work and occupational health can support an adjustment, and where the employer's own responsibility starts
- Plan a conversation about adjustments that respects privacy, focuses on the work and records what has been agreed
5 short modules, 2 hours in total.

Knowledge checkNeurodivergent minds at work
Autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia and Tourette's syndrome: how each can affect communication, attention, memory, processing, coordination and sensory experience, how they often overlap, the strengths that come with them, and what masking costs people over a working day.
Knowledge checkThe law and reasonable adjustments
The Equality Act 2010 and its definition of disability, direct and indirect discrimination, discrimination arising from disability, harassment and victimisation, the section 20 duty to make reasonable adjustments and when it is triggered without a diagnosis, Access to Work, and the position in Northern Ireland under the Disability Discrimination Act 1995.
Knowledge checkInclusive recruitment, management and environment

Equality Act 2010
Applies in England, Wales and Scotland. Disability is one of nine protected characteristics, and a neurodivergent condition counts as a disability when it has a substantial and long term adverse effect on normal day to day activities, which many forms of autism, ADHD and dyslexia do. Employers must not discriminate, harass or victimise, and must not treat someone unfavourably because of something arising from their disability unless they can justify it. Northern Ireland has its own Disability Discrimination Act 1995 with similar duties.
Read the legislation →Equality Act 2010, section 20: duty to make reasonable adjustments
Where a provision, criterion or practice, a physical feature or the lack of an auxiliary aid puts a disabled worker or applicant at a substantial disadvantage, the employer must take reasonable steps to remove it. The duty applies once the employer knows, or could reasonably be expected to know, about the disability and the disadvantage, so it does not wait for a formal diagnosis. The employer pays for adjustments; the cost cannot be passed to the worker.
Read the legislation →Acas: Neurodiversity at work
Acas guidance for employers and employees in Great Britain on supporting neurodivergent staff, including recruitment, adjustments, performance and how to talk about neurodiversity. It is not law, but it reflects good practice an employment tribunal would expect an employer to know about.
Read the legislation →Access to Work
A government scheme in England, Wales and Scotland that can fund support beyond an employer's reasonable adjustments, such as specialist equipment, software, a support worker or workplace strategy coaching, and that can provide a workplace needs assessment. The worker applies, and the employer may be asked to contribute. Northern Ireland runs its own Access to Work (NI) scheme.

What our learners say
Stories from Lift College learners on our qualifications, in their own words.
“I had been a care assistant for four years without a formal qualification. Lift College made the whole process straightforward, my assessor visited regularly and I completed my Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care in just over a year. I was promoted to senior care worker the month after I qualified.”
“My employer was clear, I needed GCSE English to move into a supervisory role. Lift College helped me find the right exam board and an exam centre five minutes from home. Passed grade 4. Got the promotion.”
“My employer needed me to have Level 2 maths before they could register me on the Level 3 apprenticeship programme. Lift College was fast, the tutor was brilliant, and I resit my maths once after a near-miss and passed the second time. The whole thing took twelve weeks.”
Questions about Neurodiversity Awareness Training
Is online neurodiversity training valid?
Your employer decides what training its staff need, and there is no legal requirement for a specific certificate. The Equality Act expects employers to avoid discrimination and make reasonable adjustments, and training that shows managers and staff understand those duties is good evidence that the organisation took reasonable steps. This course gives that knowledge; your organisation's own policies and procedures sit alongside it.
Who needs neurodiversity awareness training?
Line managers and HR or recruitment staff benefit most, because they make the decisions about hiring, adjustments and performance that the Equality Act covers. It is also useful for anyone who works in a team, serves the public or supports learners, since neurodivergent colleagues, customers and students are present in every workplace whether or not anyone has disclosed.
How often should neurodiversity training be refreshed?
There is no legal interval. Lift College recommends refreshing every 3 years, or sooner if you move into a management or HR role, and the refresher is free.
Will this course help me tell whether a colleague is neurodivergent?
No, and it is written not to. Diagnosis is a clinical matter, and deciding that a colleague is autistic or has ADHD because of how they behave is both unreliable and unfair to them. The course teaches you to respond to the needs and disadvantages you can see, to make adjustments available to everyone where you can, and to let colleagues choose whether, when and what to disclose.
How do I handle a request for adjustments from a colleague who does not have a diagnosis?
Treat the request on its merits. The duty to make reasonable adjustments is triggered when an employer knows or could reasonably be expected to know that someone is at a substantial disadvantage, not when a diagnosis arrives, and waiting lists for assessment can run to years. Talk about the work, agree what would help, record it and review it, and consider occupational health or an Access to Work assessment if you need expert advice. The course walks through this conversation in module 5.
How long do I keep access?
You keep your access for as long as Lift College offers the course, and never less than 3 years from the day you buy. Your certificate PDF is yours to keep.
What is the free refresher?
Lift College recommends refreshing this course every 3 years. When your date comes round, you can retake the latest version free and get a new certificate. We email you 30 days before.

Can my team do this course in another language?
