It is 15 credits, 130 guided learning hours and 153 hours total qualification time. Training Qualifications UK issues the certificate, and Lift College is a TQUK recognised centre.

How long does it take?

How is it assessed?

By a portfolio of written assignments and workbook questions for each of the five units. Your named UK tutor marks your work, and TQUK externally quality assures it. The result is pass or fail.

Are there any exams?

No. There are no exams, no timed tests and no workplace observations. Everything is written work you complete online.

What are the entry requirements?

There are no formal entry requirements. You need to be 16 or over, and the course is taught and assessed in English. You do not need any previous qualification or experience to start.

One price covers the whole course: your named UK tutor, marking, AI Study Support, your TQUK registration and your TQUK certificate. You can pay monthly or in full, and the prices are shown on this page. Every plan starts with a 7-day free trial and is covered by our 14-day money back guarantee. Can my employer pay?

Yes. Your employer can open an organisation account with Lift College, add you and any colleagues, and pay by card or by invoice with their own PO number. An organisation place is £242.99, 10% off the £269.99 one person pays today, paid by card or invoice.

What can I do after this qualification?

You could use the certificate to move into a support worker or care role, or go on to the TQUK Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care. Same-level options include certificates in understanding autism and in supporting individuals with learning disabilities. This is a knowledge qualification: it shows you understand behaviour that challenges, and it does not on its own qualify you for a particular post. Employers decide what each role needs.

What is behaviour that challenges?

It is behaviour that puts the person or the people around them at risk, or that stops the person taking part in everyday life. It can include aggression, self-injury, shouting or running away. It is often a way of communicating pain, fear, frustration or an unmet need, which is why the course starts with understanding the reasons behind it.

What are the possible reasons for behaviour that challenges?

Behaviour that challenges usually has a reason behind it, such as pain or illness, fear, frustration, boredom, or a need the person cannot put into words. Other common reasons include difficulty communicating, a noisy or unfamiliar place, a change in routine or staff, feeling a loss of control, and past experiences of trauma. The first unit of this course looks at why a person may behave in a way that challenges, because understanding the reason is the first step to preventing it.

What is the difference between conflict and behaviour that challenges?

Conflict is a disagreement or clash between two or more people, while behaviour that challenges is behaviour from one person that puts them or others at risk, or stops them taking part in everyday life. Conflict can trigger behaviour that challenges, and behaviour that challenges can lead to conflict, but they are not the same thing. Conflict is usually resolved by talking it through, while behaviour that challenges is often a way of communicating an unmet need, so the response starts with finding out what that need is.

Is this challenging behaviour training?

Yes. It is challenging behaviour training that leads to a regulated qualification, the TQUK Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Behaviour that Challenges. Behaviour that challenges is the term many care, health and education settings now use for challenging behaviour. The course covers recognising, preventing and responding to it, and it does not include physical intervention or restraint.

Does the course teach restraint or physical intervention?

No. This is a knowledge qualification about preventing, understanding and responding to behaviour that challenges. It does not train you in physical intervention or restraint. If your role needs that, your employer will arrange separate, approved training.

Is it useful in schools as well as care settings?

Yes. The principles of recognising early signs, preventing escalation, communicating calmly and supporting someone after an incident apply in schools, care homes, supported living and health settings alike.

Do I need to be working with people whose behaviour challenges?

No. All five units are knowledge units assessed by written work, so you can take the course before starting a role, or alongside a job in another sector.

How is this different from the course on distressed behaviour in children?

This certificate covers behaviour that challenges in general, across adults and young people, in care, support and education settings. Lift College also offers a Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Distressed Behaviour in Children, which focuses on children and young people.
