Can I start at Level 5 if I have never done Level 3?

I am a new manager in my first supervisory role. Is Level 3 too advanced?

Level 3 is designed precisely for people in their first supervisory or management role. It is not too advanced — it starts from first principles of management and leadership. The assignments are practical and work-based, so even a few weeks of supervisory experience gives you enough context to engage meaningfully with the content. Many Level 3 learners begin within days of their first management appointment.

Do I need to be employed to study a CMI or ILM qualification?

Strictly speaking, no — the qualifications do not require employer verification. However, the assignments at all levels draw heavily on real workplace experience. Learners who are between jobs or studying in advance of a management role typically find it harder to produce strong assignments without live workplace examples. If you are not currently in a management role, discuss this with a Lift College adviser before enrolling.

Is there an upper age limit for management qualifications?

There is no upper age limit for CMI or ILM qualifications. Management qualifications are particularly popular with mid-career professionals returning to formal education after decades of practical experience. Many of Lift College's most successful learners enrol in their 40s, 50s, and 60s, finding that their depth of professional experience produces richer, more analytical assignments than younger learners.

CMI and ILM management qualifications at Level 3 require no formal prior qualification — relevant experience in a supervisory or team leader role is sufficient. Level 5 requires either a Level 3 management qualification or demonstrable experience in a management or operational role. Level 7 requires Level 5 or equivalent senior management experience. All levels are assessed through written assignments — there are no entry tests or examinations.
