Decision guide

Choose the level first. Level 2 builds the foundations of understanding autism, and Level 3 adds diagnosis and interventions, communication, behaviour and safeguarding for people who already support autistic children or adults. At Lift College you can study the TQUK Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Autism (603/2942/7) or the TQUK Level 3 Certificate in Understanding Autism (603/3203/7) online with a named UK tutor and no exams, with Level 2 from £29.99 a month when you pay today. Both are regulated qualifications on the Ofqual register, and TQUK issues the certificate.

What to compare in an online autism course

  • A regulated certificate or a short awareness course. Short autism awareness courses often take a few hours and are not regulated qualifications. Lift's Level 2 certificate is 155 guided learning hours across four units, assessed against national criteria and listed on the Ofqual register.
  • The level. Level 2 is 17 credits and 171 hours in total. Level 3 is 19 credits and 190 hours in total, and asks for more explanation and analysis in your answers.
  • The same qualification or a similar title. Some providers sell the same TQUK certificates. Others sell a certificate with a similar title from a different awarding body. Check the qualification number before you enrol.
  • Access time and marking. One provider we checked limits access to 12 months, with a fee to extend, and another uses workbook marking. At Lift College there is no timetable or fixed end date, and your tutor marks your work and gives written feedback, usually within 5 to 7 working days.
  • What it does not do. Neither certificate trains you to assess or diagnose autism. Autism is diagnosed by qualified clinicians after a formal assessment.

Full course fees as each provider listed them on its own page when we checked on 29 October 2026. Where a provider sells a different qualification, the nearest match is shown. Prices change, so check each provider's own page and the qualification number before you enrol.

Level 2 or Level 3?

Level 2 is four units on what autism is, how it is diagnosed, sensory experience, family and environment, and good practice in support. Level 3 is five units and adds the history of autism research, formal diagnosis and interventions, your own duty to safeguard, encouraging communication and social interaction, interpreting behaviour and planning proactive and reactive support, and the barriers autistic people meet in society. You do not need Level 2 before Level 3.

Who should choose which

  • You are new to autism, starting a support role or a parent: Level 2 gives you the foundations, and you do not need a job, a placement or anyone to observe you.
  • You already support autistic children or adults: Level 3 is usually the better fit, as a support worker, senior carer, teaching assistant or learning support assistant.
  • You want the same TQUK certificate from another provider: Online Learning College listed both levels and The Learning College listed Level 3 when we checked. Note any access limit.
  • You want to try the course before you pay: Lift College has a 7-day free trial, monthly payments and no contract.
  • You support pupils with a range of needs: the Level 2 SEND certificate covers special educational needs and disability more broadly.

What you get with Lift College

  • The TQUK Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Autism (RQF), 603/2942/7, 4 units and 17 credits, or the TQUK Level 3 Certificate in Understanding Autism (RQF), 603/3203/7, 5 units and 19 credits, both on the Ofqual register.
  • A named UK tutor who marks your work and gives written feedback, usually within 5 to 7 working days, plus AI Study Support while you study.
  • A portfolio of written work, with no exams. If anything is not yet met, you get feedback and resubmit. TQUK quality assures the marking and issues your certificate.
  • Your own pace. Many learners finish Level 2 in 3 to 6 months and Level 3 in 4 to 6 months. You need to be 16 or over, and there are no formal entry requirements.
  • TQUK registration and certificate included, and Lift College is a TQUK recognised centre.
  • 7-day free trial, then monthly or in full, with no contract and a 14-day money back guarantee. Employers can enrol staff through an organisation account and pay by card or invoice.

Both are knowledge qualifications. They show your understanding of autism and do not on their own qualify you for a particular role; each employer decides what a post needs.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best online autism course in the UK?
There is no single best autism course for everyone. Decide on the level, then look for a regulated qualification with a number you can check on the Ofqual register, tutor marking and a price that includes the certificate. Lift College teaches the TQUK Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Autism (603/2942/7) and the TQUK Level 3 Certificate in Understanding Autism (603/3203/7) online with a named UK tutor and no exams.
Can I do an autism course online with a certificate?
Yes. At Lift College you study and are assessed fully online, on a phone, tablet or laptop, and when every unit is passed TQUK issues your certificate. Your TQUK registration and certificate are included in the price.
What is the difference between Level 2 and Level 3 autism courses?
Level 2 builds the foundations: autistic traits, diagnosis, sensory experience, family and environment, and good practice in support. Level 3 is five units and 190 hours in total, and adds formal diagnosis and interventions, your own duty to safeguard, communication and social interaction, interpreting behaviour and planning support.
Do I need Level 2 before a Level 3 autism course?
No. You can start Level 3 without it. If you are new to autism, Level 2 gives you the foundations first. If you already support autistic people, Level 3 is usually the better fit.
Will an online autism course let me diagnose autism?
No. Autism is diagnosed by qualified clinicians after a formal assessment. Lift College's autism certificates explain why a professional diagnosis matters and what the process involves, so you can support someone through it, but they do not train you to assess or diagnose.
How long does an online autism course take?
At Lift College many learners finish the Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Autism in 3 to 6 months and the Level 3 certificate in 4 to 6 months. There is no timetable and no fixed exam date, so you move on as soon as each unit is marked.
