Which fire marshal course do you need?

  • You have been nominated as a fire marshal or fire warden and need to know how to sweep an area, use the right extinguisher and run an evacuation: take a fire marshal course. Lift College's Fire Marshal Training covers this in 2 hours.
  • You just need the fire safety awareness every employee should have, with no marshal duties: take Fire Safety Training instead, £19.99, 2 hours, refresh every 12 months.
  • You are an employer choosing a course for several staff: compare the price per learner and the refresh period, then open a free organisation account at /business to enrol a team.
  • You need hands on extinguisher practice on your own premises: an online course covers the knowledge, and your employer arranges any practical session the fire risk assessment calls for.

What the law expects of a fire marshal

In England and Wales the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 makes the responsible person for a workplace nominate competent people to help with firefighting and evacuation, and article 21 says employees must get adequate fire safety training when they start, when risks change and periodically after that. Scotland has matching duties under the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005, and Northern Ireland under the Fire and Rescue Services (Northern Ireland) Order 2006. None of these laws name a specific course or provider. Your employer's fire risk assessment decides how many marshals are needed and what training they get. The Lift College course FAQ gives one marshal for every 20 to 50 people per floor as a typical range in low risk offices, with more in higher risk premises, and cover for every floor on every shift including absences.

How to judge an online fire marshal certificate

Employers usually check four things on a certificate: the course name, the hours of learning, the completion date and the refresh date. A certificate that can be verified online, by number or link, saves the employer a phone call. Lift College's certificate records all four and carries a verification link. The comparison table shows which other providers print an expiry date and which leave renewal to the employer.

What the Lift College course covers

Fire Marshal Training is 6 short modules with a knowledge check after each: how fires start and spread, the fire marshal's role before and during an emergency, fire safety law in each UK nation, extinguisher types and when not to fight a fire, evacuation and sweeping an area, and keeping records. The final test is multiple choice, 80% to pass, with unlimited free retakes. You need to be 16 or over. Access lasts for as long as Lift College offers the course and for at least 3 years, and the refresher is free when it falls due. For the difference between the two roles, read fire marshal vs fire warden; for the general awareness course, read the fire safety training online guide.

Frequently asked questions

Which online fire marshal course is best in the UK?
It depends on what your employer's fire risk assessment asks for. Of the five courses compared here, Lift College's is the lowest priced at £19.99 pay once, the longest at 2 hours, and the only one with a free refresher built in. High Speed Training and Human Focus are £25 to £35 before tax, and iHASCO sells to businesses through credits.
Is an online fire marshal course valid?
Fire safety law expects adequate training and leaves the method to the employer. An online course covers the knowledge; your employer adds a walk round of your own building, the evacuation plan and any extinguisher practice its risk assessment requires.
How long does a fire marshal certificate last?
No UK law sets an expiry date. Providers recommend between 1 and 3 years. Lift College recommends a refresh every 3 years and the refresher is free. iHASCO and High Speed Training recommend refreshing every year.
How much does fire marshal training cost online?
Between £19.99 and £35 per person for the courses compared on this page, checked October 2026. Lift College is £19.99 pay once.
Fire marshal or fire safety awareness: which do I need?
Every employee needs fire safety awareness. Only nominated marshals or wardens need the fire marshal course. Lift College offers both at £19.99, and the fire marshal vs fire warden guide explains the roles.
