The best online GCSE English Language course for most adults teaches the same specification as schools, gives you a named tutor who marks your writing, and books your exam so you do not have to find a centre. Lift College's online GCSE English Language course follows AQA 8700 (QAN 601/4292/3) and costs £39.99 a month on Study or £69.99 a month on +Exams, which adds exam entry and centre fees with your seat booked at one of 10 Tutors & Exams centres. You can sit in the May/June or November series, start with a 7-day free trial (nothing charged until day 8), and enrol from age 14 (under 18s with a parent or guardian's permission and support). Below we compare six other providers, as their own pages read on 10 October 2026.

What to look for in an online GCSE English Language course

  1. GCSE or International GCSE. AQA 8700 is a GCSE. Edexcel 4EA1 and 4EB1 are International GCSEs, a different qualification. If a university, employer or nursing or teacher training provider asks for "GCSE English", check an International GCSE meets their requirement first.
  2. Whether exam entry is included. Many course prices exclude exam entry and centre fees, which you pay to a centre yourself.
  3. Who books the exam. Every GCSE is sat in person. A provider that books your seat saves you finding a centre.
  4. Marked writing practice. English Language rewards feedback on your own writing. Check that a tutor marks it and how quickly.
  5. Commitment and refunds. Compare a cancellable monthly plan with a fixed price or credit agreement, and check trial or refund terms.

How the exam works for adults

GCSE English Language cannot be sat online. Adults sit the same written papers as school pupils, in person at an approved centre, as private candidates, and receive the same certificate. AQA 8700 has 2 written papers of 1 hour 45 minutes each. It is untiered, so every candidate can achieve grades 9 to 1, and there is no coursework.

There is also a spoken language endorsement, which is reported separately from your 9 to 1 grade.

GCSE English Language runs in two series: May/June and November. The November series is open only to candidates aged 16 or over at the start of the academic year, which is the exam boards' rule.

On Lift College's +Exams plan, Lift enters you and books your seat at a Tutors & Exams centre in Birmingham, Bolton, Coventry, Doncaster, High Wycombe, Mitcham, Newcastle, Romford, St Neots or Taunton. To arrange a centre yourself, read how to sit GCSEs as a private candidate; for retakes, see how to resit GCSEs as an adult.

Who should choose which

  • You want the exam booked for you and a low monthly cost: Lift College +Exams at £69.99 a month, with entry and centre fees built in. Monthly +Exams has a 9-month expected term; you can cancel any time with no exit fee, but unused exam credit is forfeited.
  • You want a single package price with exams: Open Study College at £929 for the course with exams.
  • You prefer one fixed price and long tutor access: NEC at £470 with 24 months of tutor support, before exam fees.
  • You want live classes: ICS Learn lists live online classrooms, for an International GCSE rather than a GCSE.
  • You only need course materials: Oxford Home Schooling's £14.99 a month subscription, with marking and tutor help as paid extras.

Every Lift College subject is listed on the GCSE hub.
