Below we compare five other providers, as their own pages read on 10 October 2026.
What to look for in an online GCSE English Literature course
- GCSE or International GCSE. AQA 8702 and Edexcel 1ET0 are GCSEs; Edexcel 4ET1 is an International GCSE, a different qualification. If a sixth form, college or employer asks for "GCSE English Literature", check an International GCSE meets their requirement first.
- Set texts and exam format. Check which texts the course teaches and whether the exams are closed book. AQA 8702 papers are closed book, so you need to know your texts well.
- Essay marking. Literature is assessed through extended written answers. A tutor who marks your essays, and how quickly, matters more than video content.
- Whether exam entry is included. Many course prices exclude exam entry and centre fees, which you pay to a centre yourself.
- Commitment and refunds. Compare a cancellable monthly plan with a fixed price or credit agreement, and check trial or refund terms.

How the exam works for adults
GCSE English Literature cannot be sat online. Adults sit the same written papers as school pupils, in person at an approved centre, as private candidates, and receive the same certificate.
AQA 8702 is assessed by 2 closed book written papers covering Shakespeare, a 19th century novel, a modern text and poetry. It is untiered, so every candidate can achieve grades 9 to 1, and there is no coursework: the GCSE is 100% examined. Because the papers are closed book, you will not have copies of your set texts in the exam room, so learning quotations and key scenes is part of your preparation.
English Literature is examined in the May/June series only. Unlike English Language and Maths, there is no November series, so plan your study towards a summer exam.
On Lift College's +Exams plan, Lift enters you and books your seat at a Tutors & Exams centre in Birmingham, Bolton, Coventry, Doncaster, High Wycombe, Mitcham, Newcastle, Romford, St Neots or Taunton. To arrange a centre yourself, read how to sit GCSEs as a private candidate.
Who should choose which

- You want the lowest one-off course price and will book your own exam: Open Study College at £349 for the course only, before exam fees.
- You want a single package price with exams: Open Study College at £1,079 for the course with exams.
- You prefer long tutor access: NEC or Oxbridge Home Learning, both with 24 months of tutor support, before exam fees.
- You only need course materials: Oxford Home Schooling's £14.99 a month subscription, with marking and tutor help as paid extras and an International GCSE at the end.
English Literature is often taken alongside English Language; both are on the Lift College GCSE hub.
