The best online GCSE Film Studies course is one that teaches the WJEC Eduqas specification, has a tutor who guides and marks your production, and books your written exams for you. Lift College's online GCSE Film Studies course follows WJEC Eduqas C670QS (QAN 603/0889/8) and costs £39.99 a month on the Study plan or £69.99 a month on +Exams, which adds exam entry and centre fees with your seat booked at one of 10 Tutors & Exams centres, and your named tutor guides and marks the 30% production. You can start with a 7-day free trial (nothing charged until day 8) from age 14. Few providers offer GCSE Film Studies online; below we compare those that do, using each provider's own page as read on 10 October 2026.

Who offers GCSE Film Studies online?

None of the six providers most often named for online GCSEs (NEC, Open Study College, CloudLearn, ICS Learn, Oxbridge Home Learning and Oxford Home Schooling) lists GCSE Film Studies on its GCSE course page today. Oxbridge Home Learning lists a Media Studies GCSE, which is a different qualification.

We found three other UK online providers. learndirect sells GCSE Film Studies including exams, and JQS Learning, an online tuition and distance learning provider, runs an Eduqas GCSE Film Studies distance course. King's InterHigh teaches WJEC GCSE Film Studies to pupils in Years 10 and 11 (ages 14 to 16) within its online school, so it is not a course for adults and is not in the table.

What to look for in an online GCSE Film Studies course

  1. How the production is handled. Component 3 is a non-exam production worth 30%. Check who guides and marks it and how it reaches the exam board.
  2. Exam entry and booking. Some prices include entry and centre fees and book your seat; others leave you to find and pay a centre that accepts private candidates.
  3. Tutor support. Look for a named tutor who marks your practice and gives feedback on each draft of your production.
  4. Commitment and refunds. Compare a cancellable monthly plan with a fixed price or instalment plan, and check trial and refund terms.

How the assessment works for adults

The written components cannot be sat online: adults sit the same papers as school pupils, in person at an approved centre, as private candidates, and receive the same certificate. Component 1 (Key Developments in US Film) and Component 2 (Global Film: Narrative, Representation and Film Style) are each 1 hour 30 minutes, 70 marks and 35% of the grade. Both are sat in the May/June series, the only series for Film Studies. There is no tiering; grades run from 9 to 1.

Component 3 is the production, worth 30%. You make either a filmed genre extract of 2:00 to 2:30 or write an 800 to 1,000 word screenplay extract with a shooting script of about one page (40 marks), plus a 750 to 850 word evaluative analysis (20 marks). At Lift College your named tutor guides and marks the production, and it is submitted electronically for moderation by WJEC Eduqas before the written components.

On +Exams, Lift enters you before the Eduqas deadline and books your seat at one of 10 Tutors & Exams centres in England. If you would rather find a centre yourself, our guide on how to sit GCSEs as a private candidate explains the process, and how to resit GCSEs as an adult covers retakes. Most learners study 6 to 12 hours a week and finish in 12 to 18 months, or faster with more time each week.
