Functional Skills results and certificates: when they arrive and how to find them

Functional Skills guide

Quick answer: Functional Skills results are released by the awarding body, not on a national results day. On-screen exams are usually marked within about 6 to 20 working days depending on the awarding body, and paper exams take longer. Your certificate follows the result, typically within two to six weeks. If you have lost a result or certificate, your Personal Learning Record (PLR) lists qualifications achieved in England since 2012 (Wales from 2014, Northern Ireland from 2015) and can be requested free from the Learning Records Service. Some qualifications not funded by the Department for Education may not appear. Lift College learners sitting the Ofqual-regulated TQUK exam normally see results in about 6 working days.

Is there a Functional Skills results day?

No. Unlike GCSEs and A Levels, Functional Skills qualifications are on-demand: you sit the exam when you are ready and the awarding body releases your result once marking is complete. That means there is no "Functional Skills results day 2026". The date you receive your result depends on which awarding body set the paper, whether it was on-screen or on paper, and how your centre passes the result on to you.

Turnaround times are the awarding bodies' published service standards at the time of writing and move slightly with demand, so treat anything beyond 20 working days as a reason to chase your centre. The English speaking, listening and communicating component is assessed by your centre (at Lift College it is run online by Lift College and quality assured by TQUK), and its result is normally confirmed on the day or within a few days.

When do Functional Skills results come out if I sit with Lift College?

Lift College books your TQUK exam when your tutor confirms you are ready after a timed mock. You sit on-screen from home with remote invigilation or at a TQUK-approved centre. TQUK marks on-screen papers in about 6 working days and Lift College passes the result to you as soon as it is released. Course, exam booking and one exam sitting are all included in the Functional Skills Maths Level 2 and Functional Skills English Level 2 courses, or both together in the English and Maths Level 2 course. Result released6 to 20 working days after the exam (see table above)
Certificate issued by the awarding bodyUsually two to six weeks after the result

Qualification appears on your Personal Learning RecordNormally within a few weeks of certification, once the awarding body reports it to the Learning Records Service

If an employer or university needs proof before the paper certificate arrives, ask your centre for a results statement or notification of performance. Most admissions teams accept this while the certificate is in the post. Our guide to who accepts Functional Skills Level 2 explains what different institutions ask for.

How do I find my Functional Skills results online?

There are three routes, in the order to try them:

  1. Your centre. The college or online provider that entered you for the exam holds your result and certificate record. Start there, even if the course was years ago.
  2. Your Personal Learning Record (PLR). The Learning Records Service, part of the Department for Education, keeps a record of qualifications achieved in England since 2012 (Wales from 2014, Northern Ireland from 2015), including Functional Skills. Some qualifications not funded by the Department for Education may not appear. To see it, ask your learning provider for a copy, or request it from the Learning Records Service using the GOV.UK request form. A form request can take up to a month. It is free.
  3. The awarding body. If you know which awarding body issued the qualification, you can apply to them directly for a replacement certificate or a confirmation of results letter. This is where a fee applies.

Your Unique Learner Number is a 10-digit number that most learners first receive at 14 and which appears on exam results statements and some certificates. If you cannot find it, your most recent school or college can supply it.

How do I replace a lost Functional Skills certificate?

Awarding bodies do not reprint originals. They issue a replacement certificate or a certified statement of results, and each sets its own fee, usually with a higher charge for an urgent service. Check the current fee on the awarding body's website before you apply. You will need:

  • Your full name as it appeared at the time of the exam, and date of birth
  • The approximate exam date and the centre name
  • Your ULN or candidate number if you have it
  • Photo ID, since certificates are legal documents

Before paying, check your PLR. Many employers and course providers will accept a PLR printout as evidence of achievement, which makes the replacement certificate unnecessary.

What if I fail?

A Functional Skills result is pass or fail, with no numbered grade. A fail does not appear on your Personal Learning Record, only achievements do, so a resit carries no record of the earlier attempt. You can resit as many times as you need; a Lift College course includes your first sitting of each component, and further sittings carry a resit fee. See Functional Skills Level 2 pass marks for how the pass boundary is set.

Is there a Functional Skills results day in 2026?
No. Functional Skills exams are sat on demand throughout the year and each result is released individually by the awarding body once marked.
How do I find my Functional Skills results online?
Ask your centre first, then check your Personal Learning Record: ask your learning provider for a copy, or request it from the Learning Records Service using the GOV.UK request form. A form request can take up to a month. It lists qualifications achieved in England since 2012 (Wales from 2014, Northern Ireland from 2015). Some qualifications not funded by the Department for Education may not appear.
How long does a Functional Skills certificate take to arrive?
Typically two to six weeks after your result, sent via your centre. Ask your centre for a results statement if you need proof sooner.
Can I get a replacement Functional Skills certificate?
Yes, from the awarding body that issued it. Expect to pay a fee set by that awarding body and to provide ID. Check your PLR first, as a printout is often accepted instead.
