CPD guide

You can do safeguarding adults level 2 training online with Lift College. The Safeguarding Adults Level 2 course is 3 hours of learning across 7 short modules, costs £19.99 pay once, and gives you a CPD certificate issued by Lift College the same day you pass. It covers what the Care Act 2014 expects workers to know about adult safeguarding, and Lift College recommends refreshing every 3 years, with the refresher free when it is due.

Adults at risk are often harmed by people they know and trust. You may be the one who notices a change, an unexplained bruise or money going missing. Level here means safeguarding competency level, and Level 2 is for staff in regular contact with adults at risk.

What employers look for in an online safeguarding adults certificate

Your employer decides the safeguarding training your role needs and how often you refresh it, based on its own policies and the guidance it follows. In health, the adult Intercollegiate Document places at Level 2 staff in regular contact with patients, families, carers or the public, and the same depth suits most care and support staff. A good certificate:

  • Names the course and level.
  • Records the hours of learning and the completion date.
  • Shows a refresh date.
  • Can be verified, with a unique number.
  • Reflects current UK law and guidance, such as the Care Act 2014 and the Mental Capacity Act 2005.

The Lift College certificate does each of these. It records Safeguarding Adults Level 2, 3 hours of learning, your completion date and a recommended refresh date 3 years later. It is a PDF issued the same day you pass, with a unique certificate number and a verification link. The adult Intercollegiate Document suggests 3 hours of training per 3 years at Level 2.

What the Lift College course covers

You learn the six safeguarding principles, the types of abuse and neglect, and how mental capacity shapes what you do. You learn to respond to a concern, keep the person at the centre, and record and report it. There are 7 modules, each with a knowledge check:

  1. Adult safeguarding and the law. What the Care Act 2014 means by an adult at risk, council enquiries and Safeguarding Adults Boards.
  2. The six safeguarding principles. Empowerment, prevention, proportionality, protection, partnership and accountability, and how they guide your day.
  3. Types of abuse and neglect. Physical, sexual, psychological, financial, domestic, discriminatory and organisational abuse, modern slavery, neglect and self-neglect.
  4. Capacity, consent and choice. The five Mental Capacity Act principles and Making Safeguarding Personal: what the person wants to happen.
  5. Responding to a concern. Making the person safe, listening to a disclosure, and what to do if someone is in immediate danger.
  6. Recording, reporting and sharing. Clear records, who to report to, and sharing information appropriately with your manager and the council.
  7. Positions of trust and Prevent. Concerns about colleagues or other professionals, whistleblowing, and recognising radicalisation as a safeguarding issue.

The final test is multiple choice, with an 80% pass mark and unlimited free retakes. You keep access for as long as Lift College offers the course, and never less than 3 years from the day you buy.

The law and guidance it is written around

The course page lists the law and guidance the course supports:

  • Care Act 2014, section 42. In England, the council must make enquiries when it has reasonable cause to suspect that an adult with needs for care and support is experiencing, or is at risk of, abuse or neglect and cannot protect themselves. Section 43 also requires each council to set up a Safeguarding Adults Board.
  • Mental Capacity Act 2005, section 1. Five principles, starting with: "A person must be assumed to have capacity unless it is established that he lacks capacity."
  • Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015, section 26. The Prevent duty for specified bodies such as councils and the NHS.
  • The adult Intercollegiate Document (Adult Safeguarding: Roles and Competencies for Health Care Staff, 2nd edition, 2024). Professional guidance setting out what health care staff at each level should know and do, with suggested training hours over three years.
  • Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act 2014, Part 7. Safeguarding duties for adults at risk and children at risk in Wales, with day-to-day practice following the Wales Safeguarding Procedures.
  • Adult Support and Protection (Scotland) Act 2007. The Scottish law on protecting adults at risk of harm, including inquiries by councils and protection orders.

Level 2 or level 3?

Level 2 teaches you to recognise, respond to and report concerns. Level 3 is for staff who help assess risk, contribute to section 42 enquiries and plan how to protect someone, such as registered nurses, registered managers and social workers. If that describes your role, read our guide to safeguarding adults level 3 training online. If you also work with children, see safeguarding children level 2 or the combined safeguarding adults and children training guide.
