What employers look for in an online slips, trips and falls certificate
Your employer decides the training your workplace needs, based on its own risk assessment of floors, walkways, stairs and any work at height. When you complete slips, trips and falls training, a good certificate shows four things.
- The course and the hours. The certificate should name the course and the hours of learning, so it can sit in your training record or CPD log.
- A date and a way to check it. A completion date, a unique certificate number and a verification link let your employer confirm it.
- Content that follows UK law and HSE guidance. The course should be written around the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, the Work at Height Regulations 2005 and the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974.
- A refresh date. A recommended refresh-by date helps you and your employer plan the next update.
The Lift College certificate does each of these. It records that you completed Slips, Trips and Falls Training with Lift College, shows 2 hours of learning, your completion date and a recommended refresh date 3 years later, and carries a unique certificate number and verification link.

What the Lift College course covers
The course has 5 short modules, each with a knowledge check, then a multiple-choice final test. You need 80% to pass, with unlimited free retakes.
- Why slips and trips happen. Contamination, obstructions, uneven floors, poor lighting, footwear and rushing. How the causes combine.
- Floors, spills and housekeeping. Cleaning up spills, using signs, keeping routes clear and managing cables, mats and deliveries.
- Your workplace and the law. What the Workplace Regulations 1992 require for floors and traffic routes, and your duty to report.
- Falls from height basics. The avoid, prevent, minimise approach in the Work at Height Regulations 2005, and when ladders suit a task.
- Using ladders and stepladders. Choosing the right ladder, checking it before use and simple precautions for short, low-risk tasks.
By the end you can identify common causes of slips and trips, deal with spills quickly and safely, keep walkways, stairs and traffic routes clear, explain the role of flooring, lighting and footwear, describe the avoid, prevent, minimise approach to work at height, check and use ladders and stepladders sensibly for short, low-risk tasks, and report floor and access hazards through the right channels.
The law and guidance it is written around
- Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, regulation 12. Floors and traffic routes must be suitable for their use and free from holes, slopes, unevenness or slipperiness that expose people to risk. They must be kept free from obstructions and substances that may cause a slip, trip or fall, and staircases need handrails.
- Work at Height Regulations 2005, regulation 6. Employers must avoid work at height where reasonably practicable. Where it cannot be avoided, they must take suitable measures to prevent falls, and where a risk remains, minimise the distance and consequences of a fall.
- Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, section 7. Employees must take reasonable care of themselves and others affected by their work and co-operate with their employer.
- HSE: Safe use of ladders and stepladders. HSE states that "Ladders and stepladders are not banned under health and safety law" and that they can suit low-risk, short-duration tasks. Module 5 is written around this approach.
