Level 3 is the level of A Levels. In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, GOV.UK places the A level, the Access to Higher Education Diploma, the T Level, the advanced apprenticeship, the level 3 diploma and the level 3 NVQ at Level 3, so each is at the same level as an A Level, though sizes differ. In Scotland, a Higher at SCQF level 6 is comparable to an A Level. You can study a Level 3 online with Lift College: A Levels from £49.99 a month per subject from age 14, or the QAA approved Access to HE Diploma, which carries UCAS points, for £79.99 a month from age 19, each with a 7-day free trial and 14-day money back on every payment.

Is Level 3 equivalent to A Levels?
Yes, in level. GOV.UK puts the A level and every qualification above at Level 3, and its apprenticeship guidance calls an advanced (Level 3) apprenticeship equivalent to an A level. Sizes differ: UCAS measures size in guided learning hours (an A Level is 360), and GOV.UK says a T Level is broadly equivalent in size to 3 A Levels. So "level 3 diploma equivalent" depends on the diploma. Universities and employers look at the exact title, its size and your grades.
The guide to Level 3 vs Level 5 vs Level 7 shows how Level 3 leads on to higher levels.
How Level 3 compares in Scotland
Scotland uses the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF). The SCQF Partnership says that a Higher at SCQF level 6 is comparable to an A Level at RQF level 3. Advanced Highers and the Scottish Baccalaureate sit one level higher, at SCQF level 7, alongside the Higher National Certificate. These are broad comparisons of the level of challenge, not exact equivalences.
UCAS points for Level 3 qualifications
Many Level 3 qualifications carry UCAS Tariff points, which some universities use in entry requirements. Points depend on the qualification's size and your grade.
| Qualification and grade | UCAS Tariff points |
|---|---|
| A Level at A* | 56 |
| A Level at A | 48 |
| A Level at B | 40 |
| A Level at C | 32 |
| A Level at D | 24 |
| A Level at E | 16 |
| Access to HE Diploma, all 45 graded credits at Distinction | 144 (the maximum) |
| T Level at Distinction* | 168 |
| T Level at Distinction | 144 |
So three A Levels at grade A (3 x 48), a T Level at Distinction and an Access to HE Diploma with all 45 graded credits at Distinction all come to 144 points. QAA says Access to HE students are accepted at over 140 universities every year. Entry requirements vary, so check each university.
