Allergen Awareness Training
You can do allergen awareness training online in the UK with Lift College's Allergen Awareness Training course. It is 1 hour of learning in 4 short modules, covering the difference between an allergy, an intolerance and coeliac disease, the 14 allergens the law names, how allergen information must be given for prepacked, prepacked for direct sale and loose food, Natasha's Law, allergen matrices and recipe control, preventing cross contact, and what to do if a customer has a reaction. It costs £19.99, pay once, and your CPD certificate issued by Lift College is ready the same day you pass. Lift College recommends a refresh every 12 months, and the refresher is free.
Around two million people in the UK live with a diagnosed food allergy, and a serious reaction can kill within minutes. Natasha's Law, introduced after the death of Natasha Ednan-Laperouse from a sandwich with undeclared sesame, means every business that sells food must be able to tell a customer exactly what is in it. Staff who get this wrong put lives at risk and the business in court.
This course covers what every food worker needs to know about allergens. You learn the difference between allergy, intolerance and coeliac disease, the 14 allergens the law names and where they hide, how information must be given for packaged, prepacked for direct sale and loose food, how to keep an allergen matrix accurate, how cross contact happens and how to stop it, how to handle an allergen request, and what to do if someone has a reaction. It is written for food businesses across the UK.
- Explain the difference between a food allergy, an intolerance and coeliac disease
- Name the 14 allergens the law requires to be declared and where they hide in ingredients
- Describe how allergen information must be provided for prepacked, prepacked for direct sale and loose food

What learners say about Lift College
Questions about Allergen Awareness Training
Is online allergen awareness training valid?
Your employer decides what training you need, and food law requires food handlers to be trained in line with their work. Environmental health officers expect allergen training for anyone who prepares or serves food. This course covers that knowledge; your employer adds your own menu, matrix and procedures.
How often should allergen awareness training be done?
There is no legal interval, but menus, suppliers and the law change. Lift College recommends refreshing every 12 months, in step with food hygiene training, and the refresher is free.
What is Natasha's Law?
The rule, in force since 1 October 2021, that food prepacked for direct sale, such as a sandwich made and wrapped on the premises, must carry a full ingredients list with the 14 allergens emphasised. It is named after Natasha Ednan-Laperouse.
What are the 14 allergens?
Celery, cereals containing gluten, crustaceans, eggs, fish, lupin, milk, molluscs, mustard, peanuts, sesame, soybeans, sulphur dioxide and sulphites above 10 milligrams per kilogram or litre, and tree nuts. The course covers where each one hides.
What should I do if a customer has an allergic reaction?
Call 999 and say anaphylaxis. Help them use their adrenaline auto injector if they have one, keep them lying down with legs raised unless breathing is difficult, and stay with them. Keep the food and its packaging for investigation.
How long do I keep access?
You keep your access for as long as Lift College offers the course, and never less than 3 years from the day you buy. Your certificate PDF is yours to keep.
What is the free refresher?
Lift College recommends refreshing this course every 12 months. When your date comes round, you can retake the latest version free and get a new certificate. We email you 30 days before.
Does it count towards my CPD?
Yes. The course is 1 hour of learning, shown on your CPD certificate issued by Lift College, so you can log the hours in your CPD record.
Can I get my money back?
Yes. Ask within 14 days of paying and we refund you in full.
Can my employer pay?
Yes. Your receipt shows the course, the date and the amount paid, and you can pass it to your employer. Buying for a team? Ask about team enrolment and the team will help.
