About this course

GDPR Training (Ireland)

You can do GDPR training online in Ireland with Lift College's GDPR Training (Ireland) course, written for workplaces in the Republic of Ireland. It is 2 hours of learning in 5 short modules, covering what counts as personal data and special category data, the seven data protection principles, the six lawful bases including consent and legitimate interests, the rights people have over their data and how to recognise a request, keeping data secure in everyday work, what a personal data breach is and the 72-hour deadline for notifying the Data Protection Commission, the role of the data protection officer, and transfers of data outside the European Economic Area. It costs €22.99, pay once, and your CPD certificate issued by Lift College is ready the same day you pass. Lift College recommends a refresh every 12 months, and the refresher is free.

In Ireland the General Data Protection Regulation, Regulation (EU) 2016/679, applies directly as EU law, with the Data Protection Act 2018 filling in the national detail. The Data Protection Commission (DPC) is Ireland's supervisory authority, and because so many large technology companies have their European headquarters in Dublin, the DPC is also the lead authority for some of the biggest GDPR cases in Europe. For an ordinary Irish employer the stakes are more everyday: a misdirected email, a lost laptop, a CCTV system with no signage or a marketing list with no lawful basis can all lead to complaints, DPC inquiries and fines of up to 20 million euro or 4 per cent of worldwide turnover. Article 39 of the GDPR expects staff who process personal data to be trained, and the DPC asks about training when it investigates.

This course turns the law into habits for the people who actually handle the data: receptionists, administrators, HR and payroll staff, sales and marketing teams, carers, teachers, club secretaries and managers across the Republic of Ireland. It uses Irish examples, from a GP practice in Galway to a credit union in Limerick, and it explains what to do, who to tell and how quickly when a mistake happens.

By the end you can
  • Explain how the EU GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 apply to organisations in Ireland and the role of the Data Protection Commission
  • Identify personal data and special category data in your own work, including CCTV, PPS numbers and health information
  • Apply the seven data protection principles and the six lawful bases to everyday tasks
  • Recognise a data subject access request, erasure request or objection and pass it on within the one-month deadline
  • Describe the data protection officer's role and when an Irish organisation must appoint one
  • Keep personal data secure with passwords, encryption, clear desks, careful emailing and safe disposal
  • Recognise a personal data breach, report it internally at once and describe the 72-hour notification to the DPC
  • Explain the rules for sharing data with processors and transferring it outside the European Economic Area

The law

The law this course supports

Regulation (EU) 2016/679 (General Data Protection Regulation)

The GDPR applies directly in Ireland to every organisation that processes personal data, public or private, large or small. It sets the principles, lawful bases and individual rights, requires breaches to be notified to the supervisory authority within 72 hours where there is a risk to people, and allows fines of up to 20 million euro or 4 per cent of worldwide turnover.

Read the legislation →

Data Protection Act 2018

The 2018 Act gives further effect to the GDPR in Ireland. It establishes the Data Protection Commission, sets the digital age of consent at 16, provides for the processing of special category data in areas such as employment and health, and sets out how the DPC investigates complaints and enforces the law.

Data Protection Commission

The DPC is Ireland's independent supervisory authority for data protection. It handles complaints from individuals, receives breach notifications from controllers, publishes guidance for organisations and individuals, and can carry out inquiries and impose fines and corrective measures.

FAQ

Questions about GDPR Training (Ireland)

Is online GDPR training valid in Ireland?

The GDPR does not name a particular course, but it expects controllers to be able to show they comply, and Article 39 makes staff awareness and training part of the data protection officer's job. The Data Protection Commission asks about training when it investigates a complaint or a breach. This course covers the EU GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 as they apply in Ireland, and your CPD certificate issued by Lift College gives your employer a dated record for each member of staff.

How often should GDPR training be refreshed in Ireland?

The law sets no interval, but the Data Protection Commission expects awareness to be kept up to date, and guidance, case law and the way we work with data change every year. Lift College recommends a refresh every 12 months, and the refresher is free.

Does this course make me a data protection officer?

No. It gives every member of staff the working knowledge the GDPR expects. A data protection officer needs expert knowledge of data protection law and practice, and organisations in Ireland that are public bodies, or that monitor people on a large scale or process special category data on a large scale, must appoint one. The course explains what the DPO does and when one is required, so you know who to turn to; it does not qualify you for the role.

Is this course different from the UK GDPR course?

Yes. This edition is written for the Republic of Ireland, where the EU GDPR applies directly alongside the Data Protection Act 2018 and the Data Protection Commission is the supervisory authority. Workplaces in the UK should take [GDPR Training](/cpd/gdpr-training), which covers UK law and the UK regulator.

How do I report a data breach in Ireland?

Tell your manager or data protection officer immediately, even if you are not sure it counts, and write down what happened, when, what data was involved and who it affects. Your organisation, as controller, then decides whether the breach is likely to risk people's rights and, if so, notifies the Data Protection Commission through its online breach form within 72 hours of becoming aware, and tells the people affected where the risk is high. Do not try to fix or hide it yourself. The course walks through real Irish examples of what to report and how.

How long do I keep access?

You keep your access for as long as Lift College offers the course, and never less than 3 years from the day you buy. Your certificate PDF is yours to keep.

What is the free refresher?

Lift College recommends refreshing this course every 12 months. When your date comes round, you can retake the latest version free and get a new certificate. We email you 30 days before.

Does it count towards my CPD?

Yes. The course is 2 hours of learning, shown on your CPD certificate issued by Lift College, so you can log the hours in your CPD record.

Can I get my money back?

Yes. Ask within 14 days of paying and we refund you in full.

Can my employer pay?

Yes. Your receipt shows the course, the date and the amount paid, and you can pass it to your employer. Buying for a team? Open a free organisation account: every course is €19.54, and you can pay by card or invoice with your PO.
