About this course

Food Safety Training (Ireland)

You can do a food safety course online in Ireland with Lift College's Food Safety Training (Ireland) course, written for workplaces in the Republic of Ireland. It is 2 hours of learning in 6 short modules, covering the food hygiene law that applies in Ireland, the four types of food safety hazard, temperature control from delivery to service, preventing cross-contamination, cleaning and pest control, personal hygiene and fitness to work, and the 14 allergens you must be able to tell customers about. It costs €22.99, pay once, and your CPD certificate issued by Lift College is ready the same day you pass. Lift College recommends a refresh every 3 years, and the refresher is free.

Every food business in Ireland must make sure its food handlers are supervised and instructed or trained in food hygiene to a level that matches their work. That duty is in Annex II of Regulation (EC) No 852/2004, which applies directly in Ireland and is enforced through the European Union (Food and Feed Hygiene) Regulations 2020. The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) is the competent authority and its Guide to Food Safety Training describes the skills a food handler should have at Level 1, within the first weeks of starting, and at Level 2, within the first year. Environmental Health Officers inspect premises on the FSAI's behalf and ask to see training records. Ireland has no national food hygiene certificate level like some other countries; what matters is that you can show the skills and that your employer holds the record.

This course covers the Level 1 and Level 2 food safety skills in the FSAI Guide, with Irish temperatures, Irish allergen rules and Irish examples. It is for chefs, cooks, kitchen porters, waiting staff, baristas, deli and butcher counter staff, shop and supermarket workers, carers who prepare food, childcare and school canteen staff, and anyone who handles open food in the Republic of Ireland.

By the end you can
  • Explain your legal duties as a food handler in Ireland and how food businesses are inspected
  • Identify microbiological, chemical, physical and allergenic hazards and how they reach food
  • Apply safe temperatures for chilling, cooking, cooling, reheating and hot holding
  • Prevent cross-contamination between raw and ready-to-eat food in storage, preparation and service
  • Carry out cleaning and disinfection to a schedule and recognise the signs of pests
  • Describe the personal hygiene and fitness-to-work rules, including the 48-hour exclusion after vomiting or diarrhoea
  • Recognise the 14 allergens and give customers accurate allergen information as Irish law requires

FAQ

Questions about Food Safety Training (Ireland)

Is an online food safety certificate valid in Ireland?

Irish and EU law require food handlers to be trained in food hygiene to a level that matches their work, but they do not name a particular certificate or provider. Your employer decides what training meets that duty, and an Environmental Health Officer will ask to see the training record. This course covers the Level 1 and Level 2 skills in the FSAI Guide to Food Safety Training, and your CPD certificate issued by Lift College gives your employer the dated record. Lift College does not claim FSAI approval; the FSAI does not approve courses.

How often should food safety training be refreshed in Ireland?

The law does not fix an interval, but the FSAI expects food handlers to be kept up to date and inspectors look for current training records. Most Irish food businesses refresh every 3 years, or sooner when a job changes. Lift College recommends a refresh every 3 years, and the refresher is free.

Is this the same as a Level 2 food hygiene certificate?

Ireland does not have a national Level 2 food hygiene certificate in the way some other countries do. The FSAI describes food handler skills as Level 1, for new starters, and Level 2, within the first year, and this course covers both. If you are responsible for the food safety management system itself, you also need [HACCP Training (Ireland)](/cpd/haccp-training-ireland), and specialist work such as butchery or vacuum packing may need further training arranged by your employer.

Is this course different from the UK food hygiene course?

Yes. This edition is written for the Republic of Ireland, with Regulation (EC) No 852/2004 as it applies here, the European Union (Food and Feed Hygiene) Regulations 2020, the Irish allergen rule in S.I. 489/2014, the Food Safety Authority of Ireland and Environmental Health Officers. Food handlers in the UK should take [Food Hygiene Level 2](/cpd/food-hygiene-level-2), which covers UK law.

How do I tell a customer about allergens in Ireland?

In Ireland, S.I. 489/2014 requires that written allergen information for non-prepacked food is available at the point where the customer chooses, in a menu, on a board or in a folder, for each of the 14 allergens listed in Regulation (EU) 1169/2011. Keep it up to date whenever a recipe or supplier changes, check with the kitchen rather than guessing, and never say a dish is free of an allergen unless you know it is. The course shows you how to set this up and keep it right.

How long do I keep access?

You keep your access for as long as Lift College offers the course, and never less than 3 years from the day you buy. Your certificate PDF is yours to keep.

What is the free refresher?

Lift College recommends refreshing this course every 3 years. When your date comes round, you can retake the latest version free and get a new certificate. We email you 30 days before.
