Health and Safety Training (Ireland)
You can do health and safety training online in Ireland with Lift College's Health and Safety Training (Ireland) course, written for workplaces in the Republic of Ireland. It is 2 hours of learning in 6 short modules, covering what the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 expects of your employer and of you, the safety statement and risk assessment that every Irish workplace must have, safety representatives, the common hazards from slips and manual handling to electricity and chemicals, and what to do and who to tell when there is an accident, near miss or dangerous occurrence. It costs €22.99, pay once, and your CPD certificate issued by Lift College is ready the same day you pass. Lift College recommends a refresh every 3 years, and the refresher is free.
The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) is the regulator for workplace safety in Ireland, and every year it records work-related deaths, with agriculture and construction the sectors most often involved, alongside tens of thousands of injuries that keep people off work. The 2005 Act puts the main duty on employers: under section 19 they must identify hazards and assess risks, under section 20 they must write those findings and the controls into a safety statement, under section 10 they must give employees information, instruction and training they can understand, and under section 25 employees have the right to select a safety representative. Section 13 gives employees duties too: to take reasonable care, not to be under the influence of an intoxicant at work, to co-operate with the employer, to use the equipment and protective measures provided and to report dangers.
This course is the induction-level awareness training that every employee in the Republic of Ireland should have, whether they work in an office, shop, hotel, school, hospital, farm, factory or site. It explains the law in plain words, shows you how to read your own workplace safety statement, walks through the hazards you are most likely to meet and tells you how to speak up when something is wrong.
- Explain the main duties of employers under sections 8, 10, 19 and 20 of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005
- Describe your own duties as an employee under section 13 and your rights, including the safety representative under section 25
- Explain what a safety statement and a risk assessment are and find the parts that apply to your job
- Identify the common workplace hazards in Ireland: slips, trips and falls, manual handling, work equipment, electricity, chemicals, fire and display screens
- Apply the controls in your workplace, use the PPE provided and follow safe systems of work
- Recognise a hazardous substance from its label and safety data sheet and handle it as instructed
- Report accidents, near misses and dangerous occurrences to your employer and describe what the HSA must be told
- Call 112 or 999 and follow your workplace emergency plan
6 short modules, 2 hours in total.

Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005, section 8 (general duties of employer)
Every employer in Ireland must ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the safety, health and welfare of employees. That includes a safe place of work, safe plant and systems of work, preventing risks from substances, noise and vibration, and providing information, instruction, training and supervision, welfare facilities and protective equipment.
Read the legislation →Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005, section 13 (duties of employees)
Employees must take reasonable care of their own safety and that of others, not be under the influence of an intoxicant at work, co-operate with their employer, attend required training, use the equipment and protective measures provided correctly and report any danger or defect they become aware of. They must not interfere with or misuse anything provided for safety.
Read the legislation →Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007 (S.I. No. 299 of 2007)
The 2007 Regulations add detailed rules to the 2005 Act for every workplace in Ireland, covering the workplace itself, work equipment, PPE, manual handling, display screen equipment, electricity, work at height, noise, vibration, first aid, safety signs and the protection of young people and pregnant employees.

What our learners say
Stories from Lift College learners on our qualifications, in their own words.
“I had been a care assistant for four years without a formal qualification. Lift College made the whole process straightforward, my assessor visited regularly and I completed my Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care in just over a year. I was promoted to senior care worker the month after I qualified.”
“My employer was clear, I needed GCSE English to move into a supervisory role. Lift College helped me find the right exam board and an exam centre five minutes from home. Passed grade 4. Got the promotion.”
“My employer needed me to have Level 2 maths before they could register me on the Level 3 apprenticeship programme. Lift College was fast, the tutor was brilliant, and I resit my maths once after a near-miss and passed the second time. The whole thing took twelve weeks.”
Questions about Health and Safety Training (Ireland)
Is online health and safety training valid in Ireland?
Section 10 of the 2005 Act requires employers to give employees information, instruction and training in a form and language they understand, and the safety statement should say what training is provided. The law does not name a course, so your employer decides what meets the duty. This course covers the induction-level knowledge the HSA expects every employee to have, and your CPD certificate issued by Lift College records it for the training file. Your employer will add the site-specific parts: your own safety statement, hazards and emergency plan.
How often should health and safety training be refreshed in Ireland?
The 2005 Act requires training when you start, when your job or equipment changes and when new risks arise, but does not set a refresh interval. Most Irish employers refresh general awareness every 3 years. Lift College recommends a refresh every 3 years, and the refresher is free.
What does this course not cover?
It is general awareness for every employee. It does not replace task-specific training such as manual handling, abrasive wheels, working at height, chemical handling or fire warden duties, which Lift College offers as separate Irish courses, nor does it replace the SOLAS Safe Pass card needed on construction sites, forklift or machinery certification, or the HSA-recognised training for safety representatives. It also does not make you a safety officer or a competent person for risk assessment.
Is this course different from the UK health and safety course?
Yes. This edition is written for the Republic of Ireland, with the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005, the safety statement, the 2007 General Application Regulations and the Health and Safety Authority. Workplaces in the UK should take [Health and Safety Training](/cpd/health-and-safety-training), which covers UK law and the UK regulator.
How do I find and read my workplace safety statement?
Every employer in Ireland with employees must have one under section 20 of the 2005 Act and must bring it to your attention when you start and after any change. Ask your manager or safety representative where it is kept; it is often on the intranet or in the office. Look for the hazard list and risk assessments that cover your job, the controls you are expected to follow, the names of the people with safety responsibilities and the emergency procedures. The course shows you a worked example so you know what you are looking at.
How long do I keep access?
You keep your access for as long as Lift College offers the course, and never less than 3 years from the day you buy. Your certificate PDF is yours to keep.
What is the free refresher?
Lift College recommends refreshing this course every 3 years. When your date comes round, you can retake the latest version free and get a new certificate. We email you 30 days before.
Does it count towards my CPD?
Yes. The course is 2 hours of learning, shown on your CPD certificate issued by Lift College, so you can log the hours in your CPD record.
Can I get my money back?
Yes. Ask within 14 days of paying and we refund you in full.
Can my employer pay?
Yes. Your receipt shows the course, the date and the amount paid, and you can pass it to your employer. Buying for a team? Open a free organisation account: every course is €19.54, and you can pay by card or invoice with your PO.
