The best online A Level English Language course for most adults is one that teaches the same specification as schools, gives you a named tutor who marks your work, and books your exam for you so you are not left hunting for a centre. What to look for in an online A Level English Language course

  1. The qualification itself. Check the exact specification and awarding body. Lift College teaches AQA 7702; other providers may teach a different board with different papers and set content.
  2. Whether exam entry is included. Many course prices exclude exam entry and centre fees, which you pay to a centre yourself.
  3. Who books the exam. Every A Level is sat in person. A provider that books your seat saves you finding a centre that accepts private candidates.
  4. Tutor support and marking. Look for a named tutor who marks your practice and returns it quickly, not just access to videos.
  5. Commitment and refunds. Compare a cancellable monthly plan with a fixed price or credit agreement, and check trial or refund terms.
  6. How the non-exam assessment is handled. 20% of AQA 7702 is Language in Action, a 3,500-word non-exam assessment that has to be supervised, marked and moderated. Ask who marks it, how it is submitted and whether the provider's exam arrangement covers it; some providers leave you to find a centre that will accept the non-exam assessment.

How the exam works for adults

A Level English Language cannot be sat online. Adults sit the same written papers as school candidates, in person at an approved centre, as private candidates, and receive the same certificate. On AQA 7702 there are two written papers of 2 hours 30 minutes, each 100 marks and worth 40%: Paper 1, Language, the Individual and Society, and Paper 2, Language Diversity and Change. The non-exam assessment, Language in Action (100 marks, 20%), is a language investigation of 2,000 words (excluding data) and an original writing piece with commentary of 1,500 words, 3,500 words in total. At Lift College you complete it with your named tutor's guidance; it is marked and then moderated by AQA, and submitted before the written papers.

There is one series a year for A Levels, May/June. All papers are sat in the same series, and any non-exam assessment is submitted in the same year.
