For a small UK business, Lift College gives you ready to use staff training with no minimum order and no fee to start. A free Lift College organisation account takes 15% off every course for every person, so every CPD course is £16.99 instead of £19.99, and you pay by card or by invoice on 30 day terms with your own PO number. Lift College has 37 online CPD courses, from fire safety and food hygiene to safeguarding, GDPR and first aid. Each learner gets a CPD certificate issued by Lift College the same day they pass, with a unique certificate number and a verification link anyone can check, and the refresher is free when it is due. You follow each learner's progress on one screen and download a progress report that opens in Excel.
What a small business needs from a training platform
Most small businesses want the same four things. Courses that already cover the compliance topics your staff need, so nobody has to write them. A price that works for 3 people as well as 30, without a subscription you have to use up. A way to pay that fits your accounts, which often means an invoice against a purchase order. And a record you can show an inspector, an insurer or a client: who did which course, when they passed and when it is due again.
There are two kinds of product that answer the question "best staff training platform", and they work in different ways.
A course library. You buy finished courses, written for UK workplaces, and your staff take them online. The provider writes, updates and certificates the course. Lift College, High Speed Training, iHASCO and Virtual College all sell this way.
Learning platform software (an LMS). You buy the software and fill it with your own courses, or add a library of ready made courses for an extra charge. TalentLMS is a well known example. It suits a business that wants to build its own induction or product training and has someone with time to set it up.
If what you need is fire safety, food hygiene, manual handling or safeguarding certificates for your team, a course library is usually the shorter route. If you want to put your own procedures online, an LMS is the tool built for that.

How to choose
1. Start with the courses your staff need
List the topics your business has to cover. An office might need health and safety, display screen equipment, fire safety and GDPR. A café adds food hygiene and allergen awareness. A care provider needs a longer list, set out in our guide to mandatory training for care workers. Then check each provider has every topic, with the hours of learning shown. With a course library the content is done for you. With an LMS, check whether the courses you need come with the software or cost extra.
2. Match the pricing model to your team
Providers charge in four main ways: per course, by credits, by annual subscription, or per user per month for software. Per course pricing is easy to budget for a small team, because you pay only for the places you use. A subscription can be good value for a large team that uses many courses every year, but it often has a minimum term. Credits can expire. At Lift College the price is fixed: every CPD course is £16.99 on the account whether you enrol one person or fifty, with no volume tiers and no renewal fee.
3. Check how you can pay
If your business pays suppliers by invoice, check how the provider invoices a small order. Some offer invoicing at checkout only above a set number of courses and ask you to contact their sales team for smaller orders. A Lift College organisation account lets you choose card or invoice at checkout for any order, with 30 day terms and your own PO number. The billing screen keeps a receipt and an invoice PDF for every order. Our guide to staff training you can pay for by invoice explains the steps.
4. Look at the records you will get
A good training record shows the person, the course, the hours of learning, the date they passed and when it is due again, and it can be checked. Every CPD certificate issued by Lift College records the learner's name, the course, the hours of learning, the completion date and a recommended refresh date of 12 months or 3 years, with a unique number and a verification link. On the account, the dashboard shows every certificate earned as it happens, and you can view or download each certificate the day the learner finishes. When the refresh date comes round, the learner retakes the latest version of the course free and gets a new certificate.
5. Try it before you commit
Ask what you can see before you pay. A Lift College organisation account opens in about two minutes, with example learners on Fire Safety Training so you can look at the dashboard, a sample certificate and the course itself before you enrol anyone. Nothing is charged until you enrol someone.
