Functional Skills Maths and English Level 2 Online: Do You Need Both?

Last reviewed 7 min readBy Lift College Editorial

Functional Skills guide

Quick answer: You need both Functional Skills Maths and English Level 2 when the job, apprenticeship or course you are applying for asks for "Level 2 English and maths" or "GCSE grade 4 in English and maths". Lift College's Functional Skills English and Maths Level 2 online course covers both subjects with a named UK tutor, and entry and one sitting of every assessment are included. You receive two separate TQUK certificates for two Ofqual regulated qualifications. If only one subject is missing, take that one on its own.

Most adults who search for "maths and English Level 2" already know a door is closed to them. A Level 3 apprenticeship, a nursing associate programme, a teaching assistant post or an Access to HE course has asked for Level 2 in both subjects and they hold neither, or only one. This guide sets out who actually asks for both, what the combined online route involves and how long it takes, and how to decide between the combined course and a single subject.

The pattern is clear: apprenticeships, further education and most employers accept Functional Skills Level 2 as a GCSE grade 4 equivalent in both subjects. The exceptions are universities and initial teacher training, where the admissions rule may name GCSE itself. Our guide to who accepts Functional Skills Level 2 has the detail by institution type, and GOV.UK's qualification levels page confirms that Functional Skills Level 2 and GCSE grades 4 to 9 sit on the same level.

Is the combined course one qualification or two?

Two. There is no single "English and maths Level 2" qualification on the Ofqual register. When you study the combined course with Lift College you are entered for two regulated TQUK qualifications: Functional Skills Qualification in English at Level 2 (610/2625/6) and Functional Skills Qualification in Mathematics at Level 2 (610/2624/4). You sit the assessments separately and receive two certificates, exactly as you would if you had taken the subjects on their own. The difference is the price, the planning and the support: one monthly fee, one tutor, one study plan.

The maths exam is a single 120-minute on-screen paper, with 30 minutes without a calculator and 90 minutes with one. English is assessed through reading (60 minutes) and writing (60 minutes) on screen, plus a speaking, listening and communicating assessment (20 to 30 minutes) run online by Lift College. Maths, reading and writing are set and marked by TQUK, and the speaking assessment is quality assured by TQUK. All of them follow the Department for Education subject content, which is the same for every awarding body. Our exam explainer walks through booking, format and pass marks.

How long does Functional Skills maths and English Level 2 take online?

Plan for 4 to 8 months for both subjects together, or 8 to 16 weeks for one. The honest answer depends less on the course and more on where you start. Someone who left school with a grade 3 in maths and reads confidently will usually finish English quickly and spend most of their time on maths. Someone whose first language is not English may find the reverse. Because the exams are booked when your tutor confirms you are ready, rather than in fixed school windows, a focused learner studying ten hours a week can sit the first assessment inside two months and the second soon after. There is no minimum study period and no waiting for a results day: TQUK results typically arrive in about six working days, as our results and certificates guide explains.

Combined course or one subject: how to choose

Choose the combined Functional Skills English and Maths Level 2 online course if:

  • the requirement names both subjects (most Level 3 apprenticeships for 16 to 18 year olds, most Access to HE and healthcare support routes),
  • you hold neither GCSE grade 4, or hold one at grade 3 and are unsure it will be accepted,
  • you want one enrolment, one tutor and one study plan rather than two separate courses.

Choose Functional Skills Maths Level 2 online on its own if:

  • you already hold GCSE English at grade 4 or above (or Functional Skills English Level 2) and only maths is missing, which is the most common single gap we see.

Choose Functional Skills English Level 2 online on its own if:

  • maths is already covered and the requirement is English only, or English is not your first language and the receiving organisation will accept Functional Skills rather than an English language test.

Consider a GCSE instead if:

  • your target is a university course or teacher training programme that names GCSE in its entry criteria. Our comparison of Functional Skills vs GCSE sets out when the GCSE route is worth the longer timetable.

Can you get Functional Skills maths and English Level 2 free?

Sometimes. Adults aged 19 or over in England who do not already hold GCSE grade 4 in a subject are usually entitled to a funded Functional Skills course in that subject through a college or funded provider. Funded places run on college timetables with fixed exam windows, and you must meet the eligibility test for each subject separately. A paid online course is the usual choice for people who already hold one subject at grade 4, need a specific deadline, or want to sit the exam from home. The funding eligibility guide explains the rules and the devolved-nation differences.

Frequently asked questions

Is Functional Skills maths and English Level 2 the same as GCSE?
They sit at the same level (Level 2) as GCSE grades 4 to 9 and are accepted as equivalent by apprenticeships, further education and most employers. They are different qualifications with different exams, and some universities and teacher training providers ask for GCSE by name.
Do I get one certificate or two?
Two. English and maths are separate Ofqual regulated qualifications, each with its own TQUK certificate.
Can I sit both Level 2 exams at home?
Yes. Lift College books each assessment when your tutor confirms you are ready. Maths, reading and writing are sat on screen under remote invigilation at home, or at a TQUK approved centre, and speaking, listening and communicating is run online by Lift College.
What if I pass one subject and fail the other?
You keep the pass. Only the failed assessment is resat; a resit fee applies.
How many hours a week do I need?
Most learners study 6 to 12 hours a week and finish both subjects in 4 to 8 months. A single subject typically takes 8 to 16 weeks.
Can I start with one subject and add the other later?
Yes. You can enrol on one subject now and the other later. Many learners start with maths, the subject most often missing.
