About this course

Abrasive Wheels Training (Ireland)

You can do abrasive wheels training online in Ireland with Lift College's Abrasive Wheels Training (Ireland) course, written for workplaces in the Republic of Ireland. It is 1.5 hours of learning in 4 short modules, covering the types of abrasive wheel and what their markings mean, maximum speeds and why a wheel bursts, how a wheel is inspected, mounted, balanced and dressed, guards and work rests, the PPE you need, safe storage and handling, and the causes of kickback and how to avoid it. It costs €22.99, pay once, and your CPD certificate issued by Lift College is ready the same day you pass. Lift College recommends a refresh every 3 years, and the refresher is free.

An abrasive wheel spinning at several thousand revolutions a minute stores a great deal of energy, and if it is cracked, overspeeded, badly mounted or snagged it can burst or kick back with no warning. Injuries to hands, eyes and faces from angle grinders, cut-off saws and bench grinders are a regular feature of Health and Safety Authority (HSA) inspections on Irish construction sites and in engineering workshops. Under section 8 of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and Chapter 2 of the 2007 General Application Regulations, your employer must make sure work equipment is suitable, maintained and guarded, and that anyone who uses equipment with a specific risk has received adequate training and is authorised to use it. Abrasive wheels are the classic example of such equipment.

This course gives you the knowledge part of that training, with Irish examples from construction, engineering, maintenance, agriculture and motor trades. Mounting a wheel also needs practical competence, which your employer assesses and signs off on the machines you actually use; this course prepares you for that assessment and is not a substitute for it. It is for anyone in the Republic of Ireland who uses, changes or supervises the use of abrasive wheels, and it sits alongside, not instead of, the SOLAS Safe Pass card that construction workers need to be on site.

By the end you can
  • Explain what the 2005 Act and Chapter 2 of the 2007 Regulations require of employers and employees who use abrasive wheels in Ireland
  • Identify the main types of abrasive wheel and read the markings for size, type, maximum speed and expiry
  • Describe why wheels burst and how overspeeding, damage, poor storage and wrong mounting cause it
  • Carry out a pre-use inspection, including the ring test for vitrified wheels, and reject damaged wheels
  • Describe the correct sequence for mounting and balancing a wheel, fitting flanges and blotters and setting guards and work rests
  • Recognise the causes of kickback and snagging and apply the techniques that prevent them
  • Select and use the right PPE for grinding and cutting, including eye, face, hearing and respiratory protection
Modules

4 short modules, 1.5 hours in total.

  1. Abrasive wheels and Irish law

What counts as an abrasive wheel: bonded, resinoid, vitrified, diamond and flap discs on angle grinders, bench grinders, cut-off saws and pedestal machines. Section 8 of the 2005 Act, Chapter 2 of the 2007 Regulations on work equipment, training and authorisation for equipment with specific risks, and the HSA's role.

    Knowledge check
  2. Wheel types, markings and speed

Reading the label: diameter, thickness, bore, abrasive type, grit, grade, bond and the maximum operating speed in revolutions per minute and metres per second. Matching the wheel to the machine's spindle speed, expiry dates on resinoid wheels, and why overspeeding is the main cause of bursting.

    Knowledge check
  3. Inspection, storage, mounting and dressing

Storing wheels dry, flat and in date, handling without knocks, the visual check and ring test, flanges and blotters, tightening without overtightening, running up behind a guard before use, balancing, truing and dressing a bench grinder wheel, and setting the work rest and guard gaps.

    Knowledge check
  4. Guards, PPE and kickback

Why the guard stays on and faces the right way, work rests and tongue guards, impact-rated eye and face protection, gloves, hearing protection and dust masks, securing the workpiece, body position, letting the wheel reach speed before contact, avoiding pinching and snagging, and what to do when a wheel kicks back.

    Knowledge check
  5. Final test and your certificate

Multiple choice, 80% to pass, unlimited attempts. Your CPD certificate is issued by Lift College the day you pass.

FAQ

Questions about Abrasive Wheels Training (Ireland)

Is online abrasive wheels training valid in Ireland?

Chapter 2 of the 2007 Regulations requires anyone using work equipment with a specific risk to be trained and authorised, but it does not name a particular course. Your employer decides what training meets that duty. This course gives you the knowledge, and your CPD certificate issued by Lift College records it for the training file. Mounting a wheel also needs practical competence, which your employer assesses and signs off on the machines you actually use.

How often should abrasive wheels training be refreshed?

The law does not set an interval, but most Irish employers refresh abrasive wheels training every 3 years, or sooner when new machines or wheel types are introduced. Lift College recommends a refresh every 3 years, and the refresher is free.

Does this course allow me to change wheels on my own?

It gives you the knowledge to do it right. Your employer must also be satisfied that you can do it in practice and must authorise you, usually after a supervisor watches you mount a wheel and checks the result. If you are on a construction site you also need a valid SOLAS Safe Pass card to be there at all, which is a separate requirement. Hired or hired-in operators need the same authorisation as directly employed staff.

Is this course different from the UK abrasive wheels course?

Yes. This course is written for the Republic of Ireland, with the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005, Chapter 2 of the 2007 General Application Regulations and the Health and Safety Authority. Lift College does not have a separate UK abrasive wheels course; its UK courses cover UK law.

How do I check a wheel before I mount it?

Look at the markings and confirm the diameter, bore and maximum speed suit your machine and that a resinoid wheel is in date. Inspect the whole wheel for cracks, chips, moisture damage and worn blotters. For a vitrified wheel, hang it on a finger or a rod and tap it gently with a light non-metallic tool at four points: a clear ring means sound, a dull note means it is cracked and must be scrapped. Never use a wheel that has been dropped. The course goes through the full sequence with pictures.

How long do I keep access?

You keep your access for as long as Lift College offers the course, and never less than 3 years from the day you buy. Your certificate PDF is yours to keep.

What is the free refresher?

Lift College recommends refreshing this course every 3 years. When your date comes round, you can retake the latest version free and get a new certificate. We email you 30 days before.
