About this course

Working at Height Training (Ireland)

You can do a working at height course online in Ireland with Lift College's Working at Height Training (Ireland) course, written for workplaces in the Republic of Ireland. It is 1.5 hours of learning in 5 short modules, covering what counts as work at height, Part 4 of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007, the avoid, prevent and minimise hierarchy, planning and risk assessment including weather and rescue, the safe use of ladders, stepladders and mobile towers, fragile surfaces and falling objects, and the inspection of work at height equipment. It costs €22.99, pay once, and your CPD certificate issued by Lift College is ready the same day you pass. Lift College recommends a refresh every 3 years, and the refresher is free.

Falls from height are among the main causes of work-related deaths in Ireland, in construction above all but also in farming, where falls from roofs, lofts and ladders are a regular feature of Health and Safety Authority (HSA) reports, and in maintenance, warehousing and facilities work. Part 4 of the 2007 Regulations, regulations 94 to 119, sets out what Irish employers must do: avoid work at height where it is reasonably practicable, prevent falls with existing safe places of work or collective protection such as guardrails and scaffolds, and where a fall could still happen minimise the distance and consequences with nets, airbags or personal fall protection. Work at height must be properly planned, supervised and carried out by competent people, equipment must be inspected, and ladders may only be used where the risk assessment shows a safer option is not justified.

This course gives you the knowledge side of that competence with Irish examples from sites, farms, shops and plant rooms. Practical training on harnesses, mobile elevating work platforms and scaffold erection is separate and your employer arranges it, as is the SOLAS Safe Pass card that construction workers need to be on site. It is for roofers, electricians, plumbers, painters, cleaners, warehouse and retail staff who use steps and ladders, farmers, facilities and maintenance teams, and the supervisors who plan their work in the Republic of Ireland.

By the end you can
  • Explain what counts as work at height and what Part 4 of the 2007 Regulations requires of employers and employees in Ireland
  • Apply the hierarchy of avoid, prevent and minimise when deciding how to do a job at height
  • Plan work at height by assessing the task, the people, the equipment, the weather and the rescue arrangements
  • Carry out pre-use checks and use ladders and stepladders correctly, including the one in four rule and three points of contact
  • Describe when a mobile tower, podium step or mobile elevating work platform is the right choice and who may erect or operate it
  • Identify fragile surfaces, unprotected edges and openings and the controls that prevent falls through or off them
  • Recognise the difference between fall restraint and fall arrest and the inspection and rescue arrangements each needs
  • Prevent tools and materials falling on people below

The duty extends to planning and organising work so that risks are controlled.

Health and Safety Authority: work at height

The HSA's work at height pages explain the hierarchy, give guidance on ladders, scaffolds, towers, mobile elevating work platforms and fragile roofs, and set out what inspection and training employers in Ireland should put in place. FAQ

Questions about Working at Height Training (Ireland)

Is online working at height training valid in Ireland?

Part 4 of the 2007 Regulations requires work at height to be done by competent people, but it does not name a particular course. Your employer decides what training meets that duty, and this course provides the knowledge part, with your CPD certificate issued by Lift College as the record. Practical competence on the equipment you actually use, such as towers, harnesses or mobile elevating work platforms, is assessed and recorded separately by your employer.

How often should working at height training be refreshed in Ireland?

The law sets no interval, but the HSA expects competence to be maintained and training to be repeated when equipment, tasks or the law change. Most Irish employers refresh every 3 years. Lift College recommends a refresh every 3 years, and the refresher is free.

Does this course cover harnesses, MEWPs or scaffolding?

It explains when each is the right choice, how fall restraint differs from fall arrest, what inspection and rescue arrangements they need and who may operate or erect them. Practical training to fit and use a harness, operate a mobile elevating work platform or erect scaffolds and towers is hands-on and separate, and your employer arranges it. Construction workers also need a valid SOLAS Safe Pass card to be on site, which this course does not provide.

Is this course different from the UK working at height course?

Yes. This edition is written for the Republic of Ireland, with Part 4 of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007, the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and the Health and Safety Authority. Workplaces in the UK should take [Working at Height Training](/cpd/working-at-height-training), which covers UK law.

How do I set up a ladder safely?

First ask whether a ladder is justified: it should be for short, light, low-risk work where a tower or platform is not reasonably practicable. Check it before use for damage, missing feet or bent rungs, and record the check. Set it on firm level ground at one unit out for every four up, resting against something solid rather than a gutter, and secure it at the top or have someone foot it. Keep three points of contact, do not overreach and never stand on the top three rungs. The course walks through each step with pictures.

How long do I keep access?

You keep your access for as long as Lift College offers the course, and never less than 3 years from the day you buy. Your certificate PDF is yours to keep.

What is the free refresher?

Lift College recommends refreshing this course every 3 years. When your date comes round, you can retake the latest version free and get a new certificate. We email you 30 days before.

Does it count towards my CPD?

Yes. The course is 1.5 hours of learning, shown on your CPD certificate issued by Lift College, so you can log the hours in your CPD record.

Can I get my money back?

Yes. Ask within 14 days of paying and we refund you in full.

Can my employer pay?

Yes. Your receipt shows the course, the date and the amount paid, and you can pass it to your employer. Buying for a team? Open a free organisation account: every course is €19.54, and you can pay by card or invoice with your PO.
