About this course

Manual Handling Training (Ireland)

You can do a manual handling course online in Ireland with Lift College's Manual Handling Training (Ireland) course, written for workplaces in the Republic of Ireland. It is 2 hours of learning in 5 short modules, covering what manual handling is, how back and shoulder injuries build up, the avoid, assess and reduce approach in the 2007 General Application Regulations, how to assess a load before you move it, and good technique for lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling. It costs €22.99, pay once, and your CPD certificate issued by Lift College is ready the same day you pass. Lift College recommends a refresh every 3 years, which matches what most Irish employers expect, and the refresher is free.

Manual handling injuries are the most common kind of work-related injury reported to the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) year after year, and most of them are to the back. Under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 your employer must identify hazards in your work and record them in a risk assessment and safety statement, and under Chapter 4 of the 2007 Regulations they must avoid manual handling where they can, assess what cannot be avoided and reduce the risk. You have a duty too: to use the lifting aids and safe systems of work provided, and to attend the training your employer asks you to do.

This course gives you the manual handling knowledge Irish employers ask new starters and existing staff to show, and the same day certificate is your proof of training for your employer's records. It is for warehouse and retail staff, carers and healthcare assistants, cleaners, catering and hospitality workers, construction and trades, delivery drivers and office staff who move boxes, stock, equipment or people as part of their job in the Republic of Ireland. It is the employee awareness course, not the HSA Manual Handling Instructor qualification.

By the end you can
  • Explain what manual handling means and how handling injuries build up over time
  • Describe what Chapter 4 of the 2007 General Application Regulations expects of your employer and of you
  • Identify the risk factors in a task by looking at the load, the person, the environment and the task itself
  • Apply the avoid, assess and reduce approach before moving any load
  • Carry out a safe lift using a stable stance, a good hold and a straight back
  • Push, pull and carry loads safely and use trolleys and handling aids well
  • Recognise when a load needs a team lift, an aid or should not be moved at all
  • Report handling hazards and early signs of strain to your employer or safety representative
Modules

5 short modules, 2 hours in total.

  1. What manual handling is and why it hurts

Lifting, putting down, pushing, pulling, carrying and supporting loads by hand or bodily force. How the spine works, how discs and muscles are damaged over time, and why manual handling is the biggest single cause of reported work injuries in Ireland.

    Knowledge check
  2. Irish law on manual handling

The employer's general duties under section 8 of the 2005 Act, the risk assessment and safety statement, and Chapter 4 of the 2007 Regulations: avoid, assess, reduce, inform and train. Your own duties under section 13 and the role of your safety representative.

    Knowledge check
  3. Assessing a handling task

The risk factors in Schedule 3 of the 2007 Regulations: the load, the physical effort, the working environment and the task. Weight, size, grip, distance, twisting, floors, space and pace, and how each one changes the risk.

    Knowledge check
  4. Safe lifting technique

Planning the lift, clearing the route, a stable stance with feet apart, bending the knees, a firm hold, keeping the load close, lifting with the legs, no twisting, and setting the load down safely.

    Knowledge check
  5. Pushing, pulling, carrying and aids

Trolleys, pallet trucks, sack trucks and hoists. Pushing rather than pulling, team lifts and who gives the commands, carrying distance, and knowing when to stop, ask for help or refuse an unsafe lift.

    Knowledge check
  6. Final test and your certificate

Multiple choice, 80% to pass, unlimited attempts. Your CPD certificate is issued by Lift College the day you pass.

FAQ

Questions about Manual Handling Training (Ireland)

Is an online manual handling certificate valid in Ireland?

Your employer decides what training you need, based on the manual handling risk assessment in your workplace. This course covers the knowledge the 2007 Regulations expect employees to have, and your CPD certificate issued by Lift College gives your employer proof of training with the date, hours and refresh date. Many employers also run a short practical check of your technique with the loads you actually move.

How often do I need manual handling training in Ireland?

Irish law does not fix an interval, but the HSA's guidance and most Irish employers expect manual handling training to be refreshed every 3 years, or sooner if your job or the loads change. Lift College recommends a refresh every 3 years, and the refresher is free.

Is this the HSA Manual Handling Instructor course?

No. This is the employee awareness course that everyone who handles loads needs. The HSA has a separate route for people who want to deliver manual handling training to others, the Manual Handling Instructor qualification, which involves classroom and practical assessment. This course does not make you an instructor.

Is this course different from the UK manual handling course?

Yes. This edition is written for the Republic of Ireland, with the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005, the 2007 General Application Regulations and the Health and Safety Authority. Workplaces in the UK should take [Manual Handling Training](/cpd/manual-handling-training), which covers UK law.

How do I assess a load before I lift it?

Look at the task, the load, the environment and yourself, the four factors in Schedule 3 of the 2007 Regulations. Ask whether the load is heavy, bulky or hard to grip, whether you will have to twist, stoop or reach, whether the floor is clear and dry, and whether you are fit and trained for it. If the answer worries you, use an aid, ask for a team lift or raise it with your supervisor or safety representative.

How long do I keep access?

You keep your access for as long as Lift College offers the course, and never less than 3 years from the day you buy. Your certificate PDF is yours to keep.

What is the free refresher?

Lift College recommends refreshing this course every 3 years. When your date comes round, you can retake the latest version free and get a new certificate. We email you 30 days before.

Does it count towards my CPD?

Yes. The course is 2 hours of learning, shown on your CPD certificate issued by Lift College, so you can log the hours in your CPD record.

Can I get my money back?

Yes. Ask within 14 days of paying and we refund you in full.

Yes. Your receipt shows the course, the date and the amount paid, and you can pass it to your employer. Buying for a team? Open a free organisation account: every course is €19.54, and you can pay by card or invoice with your PO.
