Fire Warden Training (Ireland)
You can do fire warden training online in Ireland with Lift College's Fire Warden Training (Ireland) course, written for workplaces in the Republic of Ireland. It is 2 hours of learning in 5 short modules, covering the fire warden's role as a designated employee under section 11 of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005, how fire and smoke behave in a building, the routine checks on escape routes, doors, signs, lighting and extinguishers, what to do when the alarm sounds, from sweeping your area to the roll call at the assembly point, and when it is and is not safe to tackle a small fire. It costs €22.99, pay once, and your CPD certificate issued by Lift College is ready the same day you pass. Lift College recommends a refresh every 3 years, and the refresher is free.
Section 11 of the 2005 Act requires every employer in Ireland to prepare plans for emergencies, including fire-fighting and evacuation, and to designate employees to put those plans into action. The fire warden, sometimes called a fire marshal, is that designated employee. The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) expects the number of wardens to match the size and layout of the building and the shifts worked, and section 18 of the Fire Services Act 1981 places a duty on the person in control of premises to take all reasonable measures to guard against fire and to make sure people can escape. A well-trained warden is how those duties work in practice: someone who knows the building, spots problems before they become fires, and takes charge of their area calmly on the day it matters.
This course is the next step after basic fire safety training for everyone, which Lift College offers as Fire Safety Training (Ireland). It is for staff in offices, shops, hotels, schools, creches, care homes, factories and warehouses in the Republic of Ireland who have been asked to take on the warden role, and for managers who need to understand what they are asking their wardens to do. Hands-on extinguisher practice cannot be done online; your employer arranges that separately, and this course gives you the knowledge to make the most of it.
- Explain the fire warden's duties as an employee designated under section 11 of the 2005 Act and how they fit with the employer's emergency plan
- Describe how fire and smoke spread through a building and the common causes of workplace fires in Ireland
- Carry out routine checks on escape routes, fire doors, signs, emergency lighting, alarm points and extinguishers, and record and report faults
- Identify the main fire safety signs and the extinguisher types and colours used in Ireland
- Apply the evacuation procedure when the alarm sounds: sweep, close doors, guide people out, help those who need assistance and report at the assembly point
- Recognise when a fire is small enough to tackle, choose the right extinguisher and know when to leave it and get out
- Liaise with the fire brigade on arrival and support the review after a drill or incident
5 short modules, 2 hours in total.

Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005, section 11 (emergencies and serious and imminent dangers)
Employers in Ireland must prepare and revise plans and procedures for emergencies, including first aid, fire-fighting and evacuation, and designate employees to implement them. Those employees must be sufficient in number and trained for the task, and the employer must make sure everyone can stop work and leave quickly when there is serious danger.
Read the legislation →Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007 (S.I. No. 299 of 2007)
Regulation 12 requires emergency routes and exits to be kept clear and lead as directly as possible to a place of safety, and regulation 13 requires appropriate fire-fighting equipment and, where needed, fire detectors and alarms. The Regulations also require safety signs and emergency lighting in workplaces across the Republic of Ireland.
Read the legislation →Fire Services Act 1981, section 18
Anyone who has control over premises must take all reasonable measures to guard against an outbreak of fire and to ensure the safety of people on the premises in the event of fire. Everyone on the premises must conduct themselves so that others are not exposed to danger from fire. Local authority fire services enforce the Act.
Read the legislation →Health and Safety Authority: fire
The HSA's fire pages explain what an emergency plan should cover, how employers should decide how many designated employees they need, and how fire drills, training and routine checks fit together in an Irish workplace.

What our learners say
Stories from Lift College learners on our qualifications, in their own words.
“I had been a care assistant for four years without a formal qualification. Lift College made the whole process straightforward, my assessor visited regularly and I completed my Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care in just over a year. I was promoted to senior care worker the month after I qualified.”
“My employer was clear, I needed GCSE English to move into a supervisory role. Lift College helped me find the right exam board and an exam centre five minutes from home. Passed grade 4. Got the promotion.”
“My employer needed me to have Level 2 maths before they could register me on the Level 3 apprenticeship programme. Lift College was fast, the tutor was brilliant, and I resit my maths once after a near-miss and passed the second time. The whole thing took twelve weeks.”
Questions about Fire Warden Training (Ireland)
Is online fire warden training valid in Ireland?
Section 11 of the 2005 Act requires employers to designate and train employees to implement the emergency plan, but it does not name a particular course. Your employer decides what training its wardens need, based on the building and the risk assessment. This course covers the knowledge a warden needs, and your CPD certificate issued by Lift College records it for the safety file. Your employer will also walk you through your own building, its alarm system and its assembly point.
How often should fire wardens be retrained in Ireland?
The law does not set an interval, but the HSA expects designated employees to be trained and to take part in regular drills, usually at least once a year. Lift College recommends a refresh of this course every 3 years, and the refresher is free. Your employer may ask for it sooner if the building, the alarm system or the plan changes.
Does this course teach me to use a fire extinguisher?
It teaches you the extinguisher types, the colour codes, which fires each suits, the PASS method and, most importantly, when not to try. Actually discharging an extinguisher has to be practised in person, and most Irish employers arrange a short hands-on session with a training rig. This course gives you the knowledge so that session goes well; it does not replace it.
Is this course different from the UK fire marshal course?
Yes. This edition is written for the Republic of Ireland, with section 11 of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005, the 2007 General Application Regulations, the Fire Services Act 1981, the Health and Safety Authority and the emergency numbers 112 and 999. Workplaces in the UK should take [Fire Marshal Training](/cpd/fire-marshal-training), which covers UK law.
How do I sweep my area when the alarm sounds?
Put on your high-visibility tabard if you have one, then move through your area in a set route, checking every room including toilets, stores and meeting rooms, telling people to leave by the nearest safe exit and not to collect belongings. Close doors behind you as you go, help or arrange help for anyone with a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan, and never go back in. At the assembly point, report to the person in charge who is accounted for, who is missing and where you last saw them, so they can tell the fire brigade.
How long do I keep access?
You keep your access for as long as Lift College offers the course, and never less than 3 years from the day you buy. Your certificate PDF is yours to keep.
What is the free refresher?
Lift College recommends refreshing this course every 3 years. When your date comes round, you can retake the latest version free and get a new certificate. We email you 30 days before.

Yes. The course is 2 hours of learning, shown on your CPD certificate issued by Lift College, so you can log the hours in your CPD record.
