First Aid Awareness (Ireland)
You can do first aid training online in Ireland with Lift College's First Aid Awareness (Ireland) course, written for workplaces in the Republic of Ireland. It is an awareness course of 2 hours of learning in 5 short modules, covering how first aid is organised in an Irish workplace, how to check a scene is safe and assess a casualty, when and how to call 112 or 999, what to do for someone who is unresponsive, choking, bleeding or burned, and how to recognise a heart attack, stroke, seizure or severe allergic reaction. It costs €22.99, pay once, and your CPD certificate issued by Lift College is ready the same day you pass. Lift College recommends a refresh every 2 years, and the refresher is free. This is an awareness course. It is not the PHECC First Aid Response (FAR) qualification that an occupational first aider needs, which is taught in person over three days with hands-on practice.
Under Part 7 Chapter 2 of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007, every employer in Ireland must provide first aid equipment and, where the risk assessment calls for it, trained occupational first aiders, and must tell employees about the first aid arrangements. The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) recognises the PHECC First Aid Response standard as the training for occupational first aiders, and recertification is needed every two years. Completing this online course does not make you an occupational first aider and cannot be used by your employer to meet that duty. What it does is give everyone else in the building the knowledge to act well in the first minutes, when the trained first aider may be on another floor or off site.
The course covers the primary survey, the recovery position, chest compressions and defibrillators at an awareness level, choking, bleeding, shock, burns, fractures, and the common medical emergencies, with Irish emergency numbers and Irish workplace examples throughout. It is for office, retail, hospitality, warehouse, education and care staff, new starters on induction, and small business owners in the Republic of Ireland who want everyone to know what to do while help is on the way.
- Explain how first aid is organised in an Irish workplace and what the 2007 Regulations require of your employer
- Describe the difference between this awareness course and the PHECC First Aid Response qualification an occupational first aider holds
- Check that a scene is safe, assess a casualty and call 112 or 999 with the right information
- Recognise an unresponsive casualty, place them in the recovery position and describe how chest compressions and a defibrillator are used
- Help an adult who is choking, bleeding heavily or in shock until a first aider or ambulance arrives
- Cool and cover a burn, support a suspected fracture and keep a casualty comfortable
- Recognise the signs of a heart attack, stroke, seizure, asthma attack, low blood sugar and anaphylaxis
5 short modules, 2 hours in total.
First aid in an Irish workplace
What Part 7 Chapter 2 of the 2007 Regulations requires: first aid boxes, occupational first aiders where the risk assessment calls for them, and telling staff the arrangements. The PHECC First Aid Response qualification, two-year recertification, and where an awareness course fits.
Knowledge checkAssessing a casualty and calling for help
Checking for danger before you approach, the primary survey of response, airway, breathing and circulation, the recovery position, and calling 112 or 999: what the operator asks, your Eircode and how to help the ambulance find you.
Knowledge checkUnresponsive casualties, CPR and defibrillators
Recognising cardiac arrest, chest compressions at 100 to 120 a minute, when rescue breaths fit in, how a public access defibrillator talks you through its use, and where defibrillators are kept in Irish workplaces and towns.
Knowledge checkChoking, bleeding, shock, burns and fractures
Mild and severe choking in an adult and back blows and abdominal thrusts, firm direct pressure on a bleed, the signs of shock, cooling a burn under running water for 20 minutes, and keeping a suspected fracture still.
Knowledge checkMedical emergencies
Heart attack, stroke using the FAST check, seizures, asthma attacks, low blood sugar and anaphylaxis, including when an adrenaline auto-injector may be used by the casualty or someone trained, and what to tell the ambulance crew.

liftcollege.co.uk/verify/LC-CPD-000000The law this course supports
Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005
The main Irish workplace safety law. Employers must manage work to protect employees, prepare emergency plans and procedures including first aid (section 11), and give information, instruction and training employees can understand. Employees must take reasonable care and co-operate with their employer.
Read the legislation →Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007 (S.I. No. 299 of 2007), Part 7 Chapter 2, First-Aid
Employers in Ireland must provide suitably marked and easily accessible first aid equipment, and, where the size and hazards of the workplace require it, trained occupational first aiders and a first aid room. They must also inform employees of the first aid arrangements, including who the occupational first aiders are.
Read the legislation →Health and Safety Authority: first aid
The HSA's first aid pages explain how employers should assess their first aid needs, what a first aid box should hold and the First Aid Response standard set by the Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council for occupational first aiders in Ireland. They make clear that occupational first aider training is practical and in person.

What our learners say
Stories from Lift College learners on our qualifications, in their own words.
“I had been a care assistant for four years without a formal qualification. Lift College made the whole process straightforward, my assessor visited regularly and I completed my Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care in just over a year. I was promoted to senior care worker the month after I qualified.”
“My employer was clear, I needed GCSE English to move into a supervisory role. Lift College helped me find the right exam board and an exam centre five minutes from home. Passed grade 4. Got the promotion.”
“My employer needed me to have Level 2 maths before they could register me on the Level 3 apprenticeship programme. Lift College was fast, the tutor was brilliant, and I resit my maths once after a near-miss and passed the second time. The whole thing took twelve weeks.”
Questions about First Aid Awareness (Ireland)
Does this course make me a workplace first aider in Ireland?
No. In Ireland the qualification for an occupational first aider is First Aid Response (FAR), set by the Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council (PHECC), delivered in person over three days with hands-on practice and recertified every two years. This is an awareness course taken online. It gives you the knowledge to recognise an emergency, call 112 or 999 and help safely, but your employer cannot use it to meet the duty to provide trained occupational first aiders under the 2007 Regulations.
Is online first aid awareness training valid in Ireland?
As awareness training, yes. The 2007 Regulations require employers to tell employees about first aid arrangements and the 2005 Act requires training in emergency measures, and this course supports both. Your CPD certificate issued by Lift College records the course, hours and date for your employer's training file. It is not a first aid qualification and does not replace the PHECC First Aid Response course for designated first aiders.
How often should first aid awareness training be refreshed?
Occupational first aiders in Ireland recertify their First Aid Response qualification every two years. Lift College follows the same rhythm for awareness: we recommend a refresh every 2 years, and the refresher is free, so the steps stay fresh if you ever need them.
Is this course different from the UK first aid course?
Yes. This edition is written for the Republic of Ireland, with the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007, the Health and Safety Authority, the PHECC First Aid Response standard and the emergency numbers 112 and 999. Workplaces in the UK should take [First Aid Training](/cpd/first-aid-training), which covers UK law.
How do I call an ambulance in Ireland?
Dial 112 or 999 from any phone, including a mobile with no credit or a locked screen. Tell the operator you need an ambulance, give the address and Eircode if you have it, say what has happened and how many people are hurt, and stay on the line to answer questions and follow instructions. Send someone to meet the ambulance at the entrance if you can. The course practises this with Irish examples.
How long do I keep access?
You keep your access for as long as Lift College offers the course, and never less than 3 years from the day you buy. Your certificate PDF is yours to keep.
What is the free refresher?
Lift College recommends refreshing this course every 2 years. When your date comes round, you can retake the latest version free and get a new certificate. We email you 30 days before.
Does it count towards my CPD?
Yes. The course is 2 hours of learning, shown on your CPD certificate issued by Lift College, so you can log the hours in your CPD record.
Can I get my money back?
Yes. Ask within 14 days of paying and we refund you in full.
Can my employer pay?
Yes. Your receipt shows the course, the date and the amount paid, and you can pass it to your employer. Buying for a team? Open a free organisation account: every course is €19.54, and you can pay by card or invoice with your PO.
