About this course

Medical Gas Safety Training

Oxygen and other medical gases help patients every day, but they carry real risks. HSE explains that in oxygen-rich air a fire starts more easily and burns hotter and more fiercely. Cylinders are heavy, under high pressure and need careful handling.

This course is written for people who use medical gases, not for those who maintain pipeline systems. It follows the operational guidance in Health Technical Memorandum 02-01, reissued by NHS England in August 2026. You learn to identify cylinders, store and move them safely, reduce fire risk and respond to alarms and emergencies.

By the end you can
  • Identify medical gas cylinders from their labels and colour coding
  • Check a cylinder and its label before use
  • Store and secure cylinders safely on the ward and in stores
  • Move cylinders using safe handling methods
  • Explain why oxygen increases fire risk and how to reduce it
  • Respond correctly when a medical gas alarm sounds
  • Know who to contact in a medical gas emergency

FAQ

Questions about Medical Gas Safety Training

What is HTM 02-01?

Health Technical Memorandum 02-01 is NHS England's guidance on medical gas pipeline systems. NHS England reissued it in August 2026. Part B covers how systems are run day to day, including training, cylinder handling and oxygen safety.

Who needs medical gas safety training?

Your employer decides what medical gas training you need for your role. This course is for people who use medical gases at ward level, such as nurses, healthcare assistants, porters and care staff.

Why is oxygen a fire risk?

HSE explains that in oxygen-rich air a fire starts more easily and burns hotter and more fiercely. Oxygen under pressure can react violently with oil and grease. Keep smoking and naked flames well away from oxygen.

What should I do if a medical gas alarm sounds?

Follow your hospital's local medical gas procedure. Check your patients first, tell the person in charge and report the alarm as your site directs. The course explains the steps that usually follow and when cylinders are used as backup.

Does HTM 02-01 apply in Scotland?

Scotland uses its own version, SHTM 02-01, published by NHS National Services Scotland. Wherever you work, follow your employer's local medical gas policy.

How long do I keep access?

You keep your access for as long as Lift College offers the course, and never less than 3 years from the day you buy. Your certificate PDF is yours to keep.

What is the free refresher?

Lift College recommends refreshing this course every 12 months. When your date comes round, you can retake the latest version free and get a new certificate. We email you 30 days before.
