Safeguarding Children Level 3
At Level 3 you are no longer only passing a concern on. You help decide what happens next, alongside social workers, police, health and education colleagues. Level here means safeguarding competency level, matched to roles that carry that responsibility.
This course is written around the Level 3 competencies in the children's Intercollegiate Document, 2025 edition. It covers complex abuse, exploitation, trauma and hidden harm. You learn about thresholds, referrals, section 47 enquiries, strategy discussions and child protection plans. You also cover information sharing, professional challenge and learning from reviews. Content reflects Working Together to Safeguard Children 2026 and Keeping Children Safe in Education 2026.

Questions about Safeguarding Children Level 3
Who needs Level 3 safeguarding children training?
The children's Intercollegiate Document places at Level 3 all health care staff who deliver a clinical service to children and young people. Outside health, it suits staff who help assess and act on concerns. Your employer decides your level.
What is the difference between Level 2 and Level 3 safeguarding?
Level 2 teaches you to recognise, respond to and report a concern. Level 3 goes further: thresholds, referrals, section 47 enquiries, strategy discussions and working with other agencies on child protection plans.

The content is written around the Level 3 competencies described in the Intercollegiate Document, 2025 edition, published in November 2025. Your employer decides how you meet its expectations, including any group or reflective learning.
Is this the same as designated safeguarding lead training?
No. This course is for practitioners who work closely with children and contribute to child protection work. If you are a designated safeguarding lead, ask your school or local partnership which training your role needs.
How often should I refresh Level 3 safeguarding?
The Intercollegiate Document expects Level 3 knowledge to be refreshed regularly and discussed at annual appraisal. Lift College recommends refreshing every 12 months, and the refresher is free.
