CPD guide

You can do safeguarding children level 2 training online with Lift College. The Safeguarding Children Level 2 course is 3 hours of learning across 7 short modules, costs £19.99 pay once, and gives you a CPD certificate issued by Lift College the same day you pass. Lift College recommends refreshing every 12 months, and the refresher is free when it is due. The content reflects Working Together to Safeguard Children 2026 and Keeping Children Safe in Education 2026.

Level here means safeguarding competency level, the depth of knowledge your role needs. It is not a course grade. Level 2 is for staff who work with or meet children and families, but do not lead on assessing child protection concerns.

What employers look for in an online safeguarding children certificate

Your employer decides the safeguarding training your role needs, including the level and how often you refresh it, based on its own policies and the guidance it follows. A good certificate should:

  • Name the course and level clearly.
  • Record the hours of learning and the completion date.
  • Show a refresh date, so the next update is planned.
  • Be easy to verify, with a unique number.
  • Follow current UK law and statutory guidance, such as Working Together to Safeguard Children 2026 and Keeping Children Safe in Education 2026.

The Lift College certificate does each of these. It records Safeguarding Children Level 2, 3 hours of learning, your completion date and a recommended refresh date 12 months later. It is a PDF issued the same day you pass, with a unique certificate number and a verification link, and the hours count towards your CPD.

What the Lift College course covers

You learn how abuse, neglect and exploitation show up, which children are more vulnerable, and what to do with a disclosure. It has 7 modules, each followed by a short knowledge check:

  1. Safeguarding children: the essentials. What safeguarding and child protection mean, the main laws and guidance, and your part in your setting's policy.
  2. Recognising abuse and neglect. The four categories of abuse used in guidance, with signs in behaviour, appearance and what children say.
  3. Exploitation, online harm and Prevent. Criminal and sexual exploitation, online risks, child-on-child abuse, female genital mutilation and radicalisation.
  4. Children at greater risk. Disabled children, children in care, young carers, children seeking asylum and others who may find it harder to be heard.
  5. Responding to a disclosure. How to listen, what to say, and why you must never promise confidentiality or investigate yourself.
  6. Recording, reporting and sharing. Writing a clear record, reporting to your designated safeguarding lead, and sharing information safely and early.
  7. Concerns about adults and staff. Concerns and allegations about staff and volunteers, and how to whistleblow if you are worried.

The final test is multiple choice, with an 80% pass mark and unlimited free retakes. You can pick up where you left off on any device, and you keep access for as long as Lift College offers the course, and never less than 3 years from the day you buy.

The law and guidance it is written around

The course supports these laws and guidance, as listed on the course page:

  • Children Act 1989, section 47. The local authority must make enquiries when it has reasonable cause to suspect a child is suffering, or is likely to suffer, significant harm.
  • Children Act 2004, section 11. Named bodies in England, including councils, the NHS and the police, must carry out their functions "having regard to the need to safeguard and promote the welfare of children".
  • Working Together to Safeguard Children 2026. Statutory guidance for England on how agencies work together to protect children, published in March 2026. It says practitioners should share concerns early with children's social care or the police.
  • Keeping Children Safe in Education 2026. Statutory guidance for schools and colleges in England, in force from 1 September 2026. All staff must read part one and report concerns to the designated safeguarding lead without delay.
  • Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015, section 26. The Prevent duty for specified bodies such as schools, councils and the NHS.
  • The children's Intercollegiate Document (2025 edition, November 2025). Professional guidance for health care staff describing five levels of safeguarding competency. It recommends a yearly update at Levels 1 and 2, which is why Lift College recommends refreshing every 12 months.

The course is written mainly around guidance for England. It points you to the National Guidance for Child Protection in Scotland and the Wales Safeguarding Procedures, which your employer will follow there.

Level 2 or level 3?

Level 2 teaches you to recognise, respond to and report concerns. Level 3 is for staff who work closely with children and help assess, plan and act on concerns with other agencies, such as health visitors, pastoral leads and family support workers. If that is your role, see our guide to safeguarding children level 3 training online. If you also work with adults at risk, read the guide to safeguarding adults level 2. For a broad starting point that covers both children and adults, see safeguarding adults and children training.
