How online GCSEs actually work

You study the same Ofqual-regulated specification as a school pupil, by distance learning, and sit the same papers in person as a private candidate. The exam itself cannot be taken remotely. At Lift College, courses follow AQA, Pearson Edexcel or OCR specifications (Film Studies follows WJEC Eduqas), study is self-paced with a named UK tutor, and on the +Exams plan your exam entry and seat are booked for you at one of 10 Tutors & Exams centres in England. Adults and home-educated students can enrol from age 14, with parent or guardian consent for under-18s.

Which subjects can you take online?

Lift College offers 12 GCSEs online: mathematics, English language, English literature, biology, chemistry, physics, combined science, history, psychology, sociology, business studies and film studies. The full list is on the GCSE hub. If you need a faster or resit-friendly route in maths or English only, compare Functional Skills Level 2 before you decide.

How to compare providers

Several UK providers offer online GCSEs. The practical differences are exam arrangements (some enter you for exams, some leave it to you), pricing model (one-off versus monthly) and tutor support. Whoever you choose, check three things on the provider's page before paying: the specification code, who books the exam, and the total cost including exam fees.

Frequently asked questions

Are online GCSEs recognised the same as school GCSEs?
Yes. You sit the same exams and receive the same certificate from the same exam board; nothing on it mentions studying online.
How do online students sit GCSE exams?
As private candidates at an approved exam centre. On the +Exams plan, Lift College enters you and books your seat at a Tutors & Exams centre; on Study you arrange your own entry.
Can adults take GCSEs online?
Yes. Adults and home-educated teenagers both study GCSEs online. Lift College accepts learners from age 14, with parent or guardian consent for under-18s.
When can I sit the exams?
The main series is May and June each year. November resits exist for GCSE English language and maths only.
