A LEVEL GUIDE

What are A Levels?

Each A Level focuses on a subject, such as Biology, Mathematics or Psychology. Learners often combine subjects to match their goals. Written exams, and any practical or non-exam assessment, are sat or submitted in person; on Lift College's +Exams plan the awarding-body entry and your seat at a Tutors & Exams centre are arranged for you.

University entry depends on the subjects and grades you achieve and the requirements of the specific degree course, not simply whether you studied online or in a sixth form. Some courses use UCAS Tariff points while others specify grades, subjects or additional assessments. Check each university’s current requirements before choosing your A Levels.

Most popular subjects include our A Level Biology course, A Level Maths course and A Level Psychology course.

Cost, funding and entry

Cost, funding and entry requirements for online A Levels

A Levels at Lift College cost £449.99 a year per subject on Study when you pay today, saving up to 17% on every payment for life, or £0 today on the 7-day free trial and then £59.99 a month, with no contract. Other online providers charged £440 to £730 per subject at full price on the subjects Lift College teaches on 21 October 2026, up front or in instalments. All of these prices are before exam fees, which are paid separately to the exam centre; Lift College can also book your exam on its +Exams plan.

Lift College runs a monthly subscription with no fixed contract, so you can pause study between subjects. Paying annually instead of monthly saves 15%, and starting without the free trial saves up to 17% on every payment, with your price fixed for life.

Funding

Online A Levels are self-funded, most learners pay for tuition via a monthly plan or in full up front. Some employers will part-fund A Level study where it aligns with a career pathway. If you are studying an Access to HE Diploma alongside A Level equivalents, student finance may cover higher education fees at university stage.

Entry requirements

Lift College's A Levels have no formal entry qualifications and are open to anyone aged 14 or over (under 18s enrol with a parent or guardian's permission and support). Each course page gives a recommended starting point, usually a GCSE grade 5 or 6 in the subject or a related one, for example grade 6 in GCSE Maths before A Level Maths; this is recommended, not required.

Reviews

From A Levels learners

I left school at 16 with only GCSEs and spent 20 years in retail management before deciding I wanted to become a nurse. I was terrified the Biology would be beyond me after so long, but the course materials broke everything down so clearly. I sat my exam last June and got a B.

C
CatherineA Levels

I am 37 and made the decision to retrain as a civil engineer. The A level Maths course with Lift College was excellent, the tutor feedback was fast and genuinely useful, not just tick-box comments. Studying around a full-time job was tough but the flexibility of online learning made it possible.

M
MarcusA Levels

I wanted to do a psychology degree but had not been in education since my early 20s. Studying online meant I could fit my coursework around the school run and evenings once the kids were in bed. My adviser at Lift College was helpful from day one, she explained every step and checked in on my progress.

FAQ

A Levels questions, answered

Straight answers to the 17 questions learners ask us most.

Still deciding?Compare all 11 A Levels coursesChoose a course
Can an adult take A levels online at home?
Yes. There is no age limit for studying or sitting A levels. Adults study online using distance learning course materials from providers such as Lift College, and sit the exams as private candidates at an approved exam centre; on Lift College's +Exams plan the entry is made and the seat booked for you at a Tutors & Exams centre. Many adults complete A levels at 30, 40, or 50 years old and progress directly to university.
Are online A levels accepted by UK universities, including Russell Group institutions?
Yes. UK universities assess applications on the grade and subject on the certificate issued by the awarding body, not on how the course was studied. Lift College's A Levels are awarded by AQA, and by WJEC Eduqas for Film Studies, and they carry the same UCAS tariff points as school-based A Levels (up to 56 at A*). Always confirm specific course requirements with individual admissions teams.
How long does it take to complete an A level online?
Most Lift College learners spend 8 to 12 hours a week and finish an A Level in 12 to 18 months, or faster if they study more each week. A Levels are examined once a year in the May/June series, so your timeline is set by the entry deadline for the series you want; on +Exams Lift College enters you before that deadline. Taking two or three subjects together across two years is the usual route to a university application.
Can you do an A Level in one year?
Yes, if you can give it more time each week. Most Lift College learners spend 8 to 12 hours a week and finish an A Level in 12 to 18 months, and you can go faster. A Levels are examined once a year, in May and June, so the entry deadline for the series you want sets your timeline. See fast track A Levels online.
Which exam board is best for online A levels, AQA, Edexcel, or OCR?
Universities assess the grade and subject on the certificate, whichever Ofqual-regulated awarding body issued it, and the grade carries the same UCAS points. The practical difference is specification content and where private candidates can sit. Lift College teaches AQA for ten A Levels and WJEC Eduqas for Film Studies, and on +Exams books your seat at a Tutors & Exams centre, so you do not need to find a centre that accepts your board.
Do I need GCSEs before starting an online A level?
There are no formal entry qualifications for Lift College's A Levels, which are open to anyone aged 14 or over (under 18s enrol with a parent or guardian's permission and support). Each course page gives a recommended starting point, usually a GCSE grade 5 or 6 in the subject or a related one, for example GCSE Maths at grade 6 before A Level Maths. This is recommended, not required.
How much does an online A level cost?
At Lift College an A Level on the Study plan is £449.99 for the year when you pay today, or £0 today on the 7-day free trial and then £59.99 a month, before exam fees. Providers with a fixed course fee charged £440 to £730 per subject at full price on the subjects Lift College teaches on 21 October 2026: ICS Learn £440 to £550, Oxbridge Home Learning £495, CloudLearn £499, Open Study College £499 and NEC £730, all before exam fees. The full dated table is in cheapest online A Level courses UK.
Is A Level Psychology hard?
A Level Psychology is moderately difficult. It has no advanced maths and the topics are relatable, but it requires memorising a large body of named studies and writing structured 16 mark essays. In summer 2026, 97.1% of UK entries achieved A* to E and 20.1% were graded A* or A, against 97.5% and 28.5% across all A Levels (JCQ). Most adult distance learners handle it well with steady weekly study. See our guide, is A Level Psychology hard?
Can you do A Levels online as an adult?
Yes. Adults of any age study the same specification as school candidates at their own pace, with a named UK tutor, and sit the written papers in person at an approved centre in the May/June series each year. At Lift College the course is open to anyone aged 14 or over, most learners finish a subject in 12 to 18 months, and on +Exams your entry and seat at a Tutors & Exams centre are booked for you.
Can I study online A Levels alongside a full time job?
Yes. Most adult learners study 8 to 12 hours a week alongside work, fitting lessons and marked practice around shifts. Because the course is self paced, you decide how quickly to move through each topic and can extend your timeline if work gets busy.
How many A Levels do I need to apply to university?
Most undergraduate courses ask for 3 A Levels, though some accept 2 alongside other Level 3 qualifications. Competitive courses such as medicine or law may specify particular subjects and grades, so always check the entry profile for your target course on UCAS before choosing subjects.
What happens if I fail an A Level exam?
You can enter again as a private candidate in the following May/June series; A Levels are examined once a year, with no autumn series. Your course access and tutor support continue while you subscribe, and on +Exams Lift College makes the new entry and books your seat; a resit is a fresh entry, so check the plan terms for how exam credit works.
Can you go to university without A Levels?
Yes, for many degrees. Lift College teaches the Access to HE Diploma online, a QAA approved Level 3 qualification that carries UCAS points, from £79.99 a month when you pay today (£89.99 a month after a 7-day free trial) if you are 19 or over; QAA says Access to HE students are accepted at over 140 universities every year. If a degree asks for particular A Levels, you can study just those subjects online with Lift College from £49.99 a month per subject when you pay today, from age 14 (under 18s enrol with a parent or guardian's permission and support). Entry requirements vary, so check each course on UCAS, and see can you go to university without A Levels.
Which subjects can I study as online A Levels?
Lift College offers 11 A Levels online: Biology, Business Studies, Chemistry, English Language, English Literature, Film Studies, History, Mathematics, Physics, Psychology and Sociology. Ten are AQA specifications and Film Studies is WJEC Eduqas, all the same qualifications sat in UK schools.
Who is the best online A Level provider in the UK?
There is no official ranking, and the qualification carries the same UCAS points wherever you study, so judge providers on whether you can pay as you study, whether the exam is booked and paid for, and who marks your work. Lift College offers all three, from £449.99 a year on Study when you pay today, or £0 today on the 7-day free trial and then £59.99 a month; most other UK providers charge a fixed fee of £440 to £730 per subject at full price on the subjects Lift College teaches, checked 21 October 2026. All of these prices are before exam fees.
What is the cheapest way to do A Levels online in the UK?
The Study plan is £449.99 a year per subject when you pay today, or £0 today on the 7-day free trial and then £59.99 a month or £611.99 a year. Set against other providers' full course fees on the subjects Lift College teaches, checked 21 October 2026: ICS Learn £440 to £550, Oxbridge Home Learning £495, CloudLearn £499, Open Study College £499 and NEC £730. All of these prices are before exam fees. If you want your exam entry included, Lift College's +Exams plan is £89.99 a month or £809.99 a year when you pay today, or £99.99 a month or £1,019.99 a year after a 7-day free trial.
How do online A Level students sit their exams?
In person, as private candidates, at an approved exam centre in the May/June series; no A Level can be sat online. On Lift College's +Exams plan the entry is made for you and your seat is booked at one of ten Tutors & Exams centres in England: Birmingham, Bolton, Coventry, Doncaster, High Wycombe, Mitcham, Newcastle, Romford, St Neots and Taunton. On Study you can enter yourself at a centre that accepts private candidates.
