Online GCSE courses
Adults and learners aged 14 or over (under 18s with a parent or guardian's permission and support) can study 12 GCSEs online with Lift College, following AQA specifications (WJEC Eduqas for Film Studies) with a named UK tutor and marked practice. The Study plan is £39.99 a month; +Exams is £69.99 a month (£89.99 for Combined Science) and adds your exam entry and centre fees, with your seat booked at one of 10 Tutors & Exams centres: Birmingham, Bolton, Coventry, Doncaster, High Wycombe, Mitcham, Newcastle, Romford, St Neots and Taunton. You sit the same papers in person as a private candidate and receive the same certificate as school candidates. Every course starts with a 7-day free trial, with nothing charged until day 8, no contract and a 14-day money-back guarantee on every payment.
Exam centre partnerAll Lift College GCSE courses follow Ofqual-regulated specifications from AQA, apart from Film Studies, which follows WJEC Eduqas: the same qualifications sat in UK schools.
GCSEs remain the qualification most employers, colleges and universities name explicitly, particularly in English and Maths, which is why so many adults return to them rather than an equivalent qualification. Studying online means working through the same specification set by AQA (WJEC Eduqas for Film Studies) in your own time, with structured units, mock assessments and tutor marked feedback.
The exam itself must still be sat in person, since GCSE exams are not available remotely. On +Exams, Lift College enters you as a private candidate and books your seat at one of 10 Tutors & Exams centres for the May/June series, or the November series for Maths and English Language.

GCSEs are awarded by Ofqual-regulated exam boards. AQA and Pearson Edexcel are the two boards most commonly available to private candidates and adult learners, and both issue identical grade 1 to 9 GCSE certificates. November is a second exam series for GCSE Mathematics and English Language only; every other subject is sat in May/June. Exam entry is only on +Exams. Paying annually saves 15%, and monthly +Exams has a 9-month expected term because exam fees are built in: you can cancel any time with no exit fee, but unused exam credit is forfeited. GCSE grades are numeric 9 to 1 across every Ofqual-regulated board, so a grade 4 or above from any board is treated as a standard pass by universities, employers and UCAS.

Independent online providers are generally fee paying, so compare both routes before enrolling.

GCSEs qualifications: frequently asked questions
Can an adult take GCSE maths or English online?
Yes. There is no age limit for sitting GCSE exams. Adults can study online at home at their own pace, then sit the exam at an approved centre near them. At Lift College, GCSE Mathematics and English Language follow AQA specifications, and both also have a November exam series.
What is the difference between GCSE and Functional Skills level 2?
Both are level 2 qualifications recognised by employers and universities. Functional Skills is assessed entirely online and results are available within weeks. GCSE uses a traditional 9–1 graded exam sat in May/June. GCSE is more widely recognised for teacher training and some degree entry; Functional Skills is quicker and more flexible.
What is a grade 4 and is it the same as a grade C?
Grade 4 in the 9–1 system is the direct equivalent of grade C in the old A*–G system. Ofqual confirmed the equivalence when the new grading scale was introduced in 2017. Employers and universities that ask for a grade C or above will accept a grade 4 or above.
Do I need to attend an exam centre to sit a GCSE?
Yes. GCSE exams must be sat in person at an approved or accredited exam centre, even if you study entirely online. On Lift College's +Exams plan we enter you and book your seat at a Tutors & Exams centre. National GCSE exam series run in May and June; GCSE Mathematics and English Language also have a November series.
How much does an online GCSE course cost?
At Lift College, Study is £39.99 a month or £407.99 a year per subject. +Exams is £69.99 a month or £713.99 a year (£89.99 a month or £917.99 a year for Combined Science) and includes exam entry and centre fees, with your seat booked for you. Pay monthly with no contract, or pay annually and save 15%.
Is an online GCSE recognised the same as one taken at school?
Yes. A GCSE obtained through online study and an approved exam centre is identical to one taken at school. The certificate is issued by the awarding body (AQA, Edexcel, or OCR) and quality-assured by Ofqual. Employers and universities cannot distinguish how or where you studied.
How do GCSE courses for adults work in the UK?
Adult GCSE courses are the same qualifications as school GCSEs, delivered flexibly by online colleges, FE colleges, or community adult-education classes. You cover the standard exam board specification at your own pace; at Lift College most learners study 6 to 12 hours a week and finish in 12 to 18 months, then sit paper-based exams at an approved centre in the May/June series (or the November series for English Language and Maths only). See our full guide at /resources/gcse-courses-for-adults-how-they-work.
What is the cheapest way to get GCSE Maths and English as an adult?
The cheapest route is a Further Education college, where adults aged 19 and over without a grade 4 are usually entitled to free tuition and free exam entry. If that is not available, Functional Skills Level 2 online is the next-cheapest, from £39.99 a month per subject with exam entry included, and is government-recognised as GCSE grade 4 equivalent for most purposes. See our full cost breakdown at /resources/cheapest-way-to-get-gcse-maths-and-english.
How do I find my old GCSE results online?
There is no public online database of GCSE results. Ask the school or college where you sat the exams, or contact the exam board that awarded the GCSE (for example AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR or WJEC) for a certified statement or replacement certificate, which usually costs a fee. More recent qualifications may also appear in your Personal Learning Record from the Learning Records Service.
Can adults do GCSEs for free?
Sometimes. Adults aged 19 and over in England without a grade 4 in English or maths are usually entitled to free English and maths study at many local further education colleges, usually classroom-based. Online distance-learning GCSEs, including Lift College's, are self-funded: a monthly subscription with no contract, cancel any time.
How do adults retake a GCSE?
Enrol on a course, then enter the exam as a private candidate at an approved centre. The main series is May/June, and GCSE English Language and Maths also have a November series. At Lift College, on the +Exams option Lift College enters you and books your seat at a Tutors & Exams centre, with the exam entry and centre fee included in the monthly price. Exam entry is only on +Exams.
Can you do a GCSE completely online?
With Lift College the studying, tutor support and marked practice are online, but GCSE written exams are sat in person at an approved exam centre, not online.
Can adults study GCSEs online and where do they sit the exam?
Yes. Adults can study the full GCSE specification online through a distance learning provider, then register as a private candidate to sit the written exam at an approved exam centre. Your provider will usually help you find and book a suitable centre near you ahead of the exam series.
How long does an online GCSE course take?
At Lift College most learners spend 6 to 12 hours a week and finish in 12 to 18 months (Combined Science: 8 to 12 hours a week over 12 to 24 months), or faster with more time each week. Maths and English are the most commonly studied online GCSEs for adults returning to education.
Do employers accept GCSEs taken as an adult through online study?
Yes. A GCSE certificate issued by AQA or Pearson Edexcel looks identical whether you studied at school or through an online provider as an adult. Employers see the grade and subject on the certificate, not how or when you studied.
What is the difference between GCSE grade 4 and grade 5?
Grade 4 is a standard pass, broadly equivalent to the old grade C, while grade 5 is a strong pass, sitting between the old grades B and C. Some employers, sixth forms and colleges specifically ask for grade 5 or above in English and Maths, particularly for competitive courses, so check requirements before assuming grade 4 is sufficient.
Can I retake just GCSE Maths or English online rather than a full subject list?
Yes. Most adults returning to GCSE study focus on a single subject, most commonly Maths or English, rather than a full suite of subjects. Online providers let you enrol on individual subjects rather than requiring a bundled package.
