GCSE GUIDE

Browse every GCSE we offer, fully online, with the same recognition as a school GCSE.

All Lift College GCSE courses follow Ofqual-regulated specifications from AQA, apart from Film Studies, which follows WJEC Eduqas: the same qualifications sat in UK schools.

GCSEs remain the qualification most employers, colleges and universities name explicitly, particularly in English and Maths, which is why so many adults return to them rather than an equivalent qualification. Studying online means working through the same specification set by AQA (WJEC Eduqas for Film Studies) in your own time, with structured units, mock assessments and tutor marked feedback.

The exam itself must still be sat in person, since GCSE exams are not available remotely. On +Exams, Lift College enters you as a private candidate and books your seat at one of 10 Tutors & Exams centres for the May/June series, or the November series for Maths and English Language.

Online GCSE exam boards and specifications used by Lift College

GCSEs are awarded by exam boards that Ofqual regulates. AQA and Pearson Edexcel are the two boards most commonly available to private candidates and adult learners, and both issue identical grade 1 to 9 GCSE certificates. Lift College delivers each subject against a single, current specification so tutor support, mock papers and revision content align with the exact paper you will sit.

Eleven of Lift College's 12 GCSEs follow AQA specifications and GCSE Film Studies follows WJEC Eduqas. November is a second exam series for GCSE Mathematics and English Language only; every other subject is sat in May/June. Exam entry is only on +Exams. Paying annually saves 15%, and monthly +Exams has a 9-month expected term because exam fees are built in: you can cancel any time with no exit fee, but unused exam credit is forfeited. GCSE grades are numeric 9 to 1 across every Ofqual-regulated board, so a grade 4 or above from any board is treated as a standard pass by universities, employers and UCAS.

Pay monthly with no fixed contract, or pay annually and save 15% with Lift College.

Funding

Adults aged 19 or over in England who have not achieved GCSE English or Maths at grade 4 (C) or above are legally entitled to fully funded GCSE English and Maths, or Functional Skills English and maths from Entry level to Level 2, through the Adult Skills Fund (formerly the Adult Education Budget), subject to residency rules. Adults aged 19 to 23 may also be fully funded for a first full Level 2 qualification. Independent online providers are generally fee paying, so compare both routes before enrolling.

Entry requirements

There are no fixed entry requirements to start an online GCSE. Providers usually recommend an initial assessment to check your starting level, particularly for Maths, since content builds progressively across the two year specification.

Reviews

From GCSEs learners

My employer was clear, I needed GCSE English to move into a supervisory role. Lift College helped me find the right exam board and an exam centre five minutes from home. Passed grade 4. Got the promotion.

MarcusGCSEs

I came to the UK as an adult and my overseas qualifications were not recognised here. Doing both maths and English together was manageable with the flexible timetable. Now I have the GCSEs I need to apply for teacher training.

P

I tried three times at school and never cracked maths. The online materials broke it down far better than any classroom I sat in. Passed grade 4 at age 34 and immediately enrolled on an electrical apprenticeship.

Still deciding?Compare all 12 GCSEs coursesChoose a course
Can an adult take GCSE maths or English online?
Yes. There is no age limit for sitting GCSE exams. Adults can study online at home at their own pace, then sit the exam at an approved centre near them. At Lift College, GCSE Mathematics and English Language follow AQA specifications, and both also have a November exam series.
What is the difference between GCSE and Functional Skills level 2?
Both are level 2 qualifications recognised by employers and universities. Functional Skills is assessed entirely online and results are available within weeks. GCSE uses a traditional 9 to 1 graded exam sat in May/June. GCSE is more widely recognised for teacher training and some degree entry; Functional Skills is quicker and more flexible.
What is a grade 4 and is it the same as a grade C?
Grade 4 in the 9 to 1 system is the direct equivalent of grade C in the old A* to G system. Ofqual confirmed the equivalence when the new grading scale was introduced in 2017. Employers and universities that ask for a grade C or above will accept a grade 4 or above.
Do I need to attend an exam centre to sit a GCSE?
Yes. GCSE exams must be sat in person at an approved or accredited exam centre, even if you study entirely online. On Lift College's +Exams plan we enter you and book your seat at a Tutors & Exams centre. National GCSE exam series run in May and June; GCSE Mathematics and English Language also have a November series.
How much does an online GCSE course cost?
At Lift College, Study is £39.99 a month or £359.99 a year per subject when you pay today, save up to 17% for life, or £44.99 a month or £458.99 a year after a 7-day free trial. +Exams is £69.99 a month or £629.99 a year when you pay today (£89.99 or £809.99 for Combined Science), or £79.99 or £815.99 after the trial (£99.99 or £1,019.99), and includes exam entry and centre fees, with your seat booked for you. Pay monthly with no contract, or pay annually and save 15%. Our comparison of online GCSE course prices has the full dated table for seven UK providers.
Is an online GCSE recognised the same as one taken at school?
Yes. A GCSE obtained through online study and an approved exam centre is identical to one taken at school. The certificate is issued by the awarding body (AQA, Edexcel, or OCR) and quality-assured by Ofqual. Employers and universities cannot distinguish how or where you studied.
How do GCSE courses for adults work in the UK?
Adult GCSE courses are the same qualifications as school GCSEs, delivered flexibly by online colleges, FE colleges, or community adult-education classes. You cover the standard exam board specification at your own pace; at Lift College most learners study 6 to 12 hours a week and finish in 12 to 18 months, then sit paper-based exams at an approved centre in the May/June series (or the November series for English Language and Maths only). See our full guide at /resources/gcse-courses-for-adults-how-they-work.
What is the cheapest way to get GCSE Maths and English as an adult?
The cheapest route is a Further Education college, where adults aged 19 and over without a grade 4 are usually entitled to free tuition and free exam entry. If that is not available, Functional Skills Level 2 online is the next lowest cost route, from £39.99 a month per subject when you pay today, with exam entry included, and is government-recognised as GCSE grade 4 equivalent for most purposes. See our full cost breakdown at /resources/cheapest-way-to-get-gcse-maths-and-english.
How do I find my old GCSE results online?
There is no public online database of GCSE results. Ask the school or college where you sat the exams, or contact the exam board that awarded the GCSE (for example AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR or WJEC) for a certified statement or replacement certificate, which usually costs a fee. More recent qualifications may also appear in your Personal Learning Record from the Learning Records Service.
Can adults do GCSEs for free?
Yes, if you qualify. Adults aged 19 and over in England without a grade 4 in English or maths are legally entitled to fully funded GCSE or Functional Skills English and maths, up to Level 2, at colleges and providers that hold Adult Skills Fund money, usually classroom based. Online distance-learning GCSEs, including Lift College's, are self-funded: a monthly subscription with no contract, cancel any time.
Are there free online GCSE courses for adults?
Rarely. Free, fully funded GCSE English and maths for adults who qualify are usually classroom based, at colleges and providers that hold Adult Skills Fund money. Lift College's 12 online GCSE courses are paid, but you can start any of them for £0 today on the 7-day free trial, with nothing charged until day 8, or pay today from £39.99 a month on Study.
What are the best GCSE online courses in the UK?
The best GCSE online courses follow the exam board specification, give you a tutor who marks your work, and book your exam seat. Lift College offers 12 GCSEs online on AQA (WJEC Eduqas for Film Studies) with a named UK tutor, from £39.99 a month per subject when you pay today, and on +Exams your seat is booked at a Tutors & Exams centre.
Can I go to university without GCSEs?
Most universities ask for GCSE English and maths at grade 4 (C) or above, and Lift College's Access to HE Diplomas expect them too. If you do not have them, you can study GCSE Maths and GCSE English Language online with Lift College from age 14 and sit them as a private candidate.
How do adults retake a GCSE?
Enrol on a course, then enter the exam as a private candidate at an approved centre. The main series is May/June, and GCSE English Language and Maths also have a November series. At Lift College, on the +Exams option Lift College enters you and books your seat at a Tutors & Exams centre, with the exam entry and centre fee included in the monthly price. Exam entry is only on +Exams.
Can you do a GCSE completely online?
With Lift College the studying, tutor support and marked practice are online, but GCSE written exams are sat in person at an approved exam centre, not online.
Can adults study GCSEs online and where do they sit the exam?
Yes. Adults can study the full GCSE specification online through a distance learning provider, then register as a private candidate to sit the written exam at an approved exam centre. Your provider will usually help you find and book a suitable centre near you ahead of the exam series.
Can adults do GCSEs online in the UK?
Yes. Adults in the UK can study GCSEs online and sit the same exams as school candidates as private candidates. Lift College teaches 12 GCSEs online on AQA specifications (WJEC Eduqas for Film Studies) with a named UK tutor, from £39.99 a month per subject when you pay today, and on +Exams your seat is booked at a Tutors & Exams centre.
Can 16 and 17 year olds do GCSE courses online?
Yes. Online GCSE courses at Lift College are open to anyone aged 14 or over, so 16 and 17 year olds can enrol with the permission and support of a parent or guardian, whether it is a first attempt or a resit. You study the AQA specification (WJEC Eduqas for Film Studies) with a named UK tutor and marked practice, start at any time with no term dates, and sit the exams in person as a private candidate; on +Exams your seat is booked at a Tutors & Exams centre. GCSE English Language and Maths also have a November resit series.
Are online GCSE courses worth it in the UK?
They are if you need the grade for a job, a course or university and want to study around your life: the certificate is the same as a school GCSE. Choose a course that follows your exam board specification, marks your work and helps you get an exam seat. At Lift College a named UK tutor marks your practice, and +Exams includes your entry and centre fees.
Can you do a GCSE in one year online?
Yes, if you can study more each week. At Lift College most learners study 6 to 12 hours a week and finish in 12 to 18 months, but there are no term dates, so you sit the next exam series once you are ready. GCSE Mathematics and GCSE English Language also have a November series.
How long does an online GCSE course take?
At Lift College most learners spend 6 to 12 hours a week and finish in 12 to 18 months (Combined Science: 8 to 12 hours a week over 12 to 24 months), or faster with more time each week. Maths and English are the most commonly studied online GCSEs for adults returning to education.
Do employers accept GCSEs taken as an adult through online study?
Yes. A GCSE certificate issued by AQA or Pearson Edexcel looks identical whether you studied at school or through an online provider as an adult. Employers see the grade and subject on the certificate, not how or when you studied.
What is the difference between GCSE grade 4 and grade 5?
Grade 4 is a standard pass, broadly equivalent to the old grade C, while grade 5 is a strong pass, sitting between the old grades B and C. Some employers, sixth forms and colleges specifically ask for grade 5 or above in English and Maths, particularly for competitive courses, so check requirements before assuming grade 4 is sufficient.
Can I retake just GCSE Maths or English online rather than a full subject list?
Yes. Most adults returning to GCSE study focus on a single subject, most commonly Maths or English, rather than a full suite of subjects. Online providers let you enrol on individual subjects rather than requiring a bundled package.
